The site consists of a large main factory building, with three smaller buildings, a trench for diverting water and several shack-like rooms situated around the area. The whole place is perched atop a cliff of a nearby gorge, making quite the view. Most of the chemical contaimination was in the soil near the place and was removed in recent years via efforts by the EPA and NYSDEC. the EPA did air tests and found nothing of danger in the air. EDIT: as of 2006 this last statement does not hold true. lead and arsenic were found in high levels in areas adjacent to the building and lead has been confirmed to be present in some of the dirt floors. the remediation that took place from 2002-2004 was ineffective as only portions of the property were cleaned up. more recently (2008), trichloroethylene (TCE) and trichloroethane (TCA) were found in amounts much higher than those considered safe for exposure.

Ithaca Gun first opened in 1880, on what is now known as gun hill, in Ithaca, New York. The gun manufacturer produced high end, hand assembled and crafted guns, making everything from pistols to center and rimfire rifles to muzzleloaders to shotguns. Over it's long history, Ithaca Gun absorbed a number of other gun manufacturers, including Lefever and Syracuse Arms. The company was also the sole importer of Perazzi guns in the U.S. in the 1970s, and distributed SKB and Fabarm guns. The company filed for bankruptcy four times since the early 1970s, with total liquidations in 1986 and 1996. This particular factory was abandoned over 20 years ago, although it seems to have bean closed and reopened several times before its final closure. The last inspection on some electrical boxes dates to 1973. In 2003 a cleanup was finally finished to decontaminate the area from thousands of lead shots that had bean strewn about the premises since the factory was in operation, poisoning the nearby inhabitants and waterbodies.

The location has been the debate of the city council for several years, with the latest plan being a housing development. A sign on the factory stated that there was a hearing in late 2004 about the area, but I have bean unable to find the outcome. * Demolition of the factory is scheduled to begin in late June or early July, and, if all goes according to plan, the new condos could be available for purchase sometime between late-2009 and mid-2010, developer Frost Travis said. source: http://www.theitha...0331/-1/NEWSFRONT2 September 30th 2008 EDIT: An article in the Ithaca Journal on the 24th outlined the plans for asbestos removal which could begin as soon as October 1st. Unfortunately the text box that had a fairly complete outline in the print version of the Ithaca Journal is not included in the online article. The outline as far as I can remember was for asbestos removal to possibly begin October 1st, asbestos removal going on for 3-6 weeks, then demolition to begin in 7 weeks. There are still unresolved issues regarding asbestos removal and differences between the CAG's interests and the developer's interests. October 2nd 2008: It appears that asbestos removal has begun, several construction trailors are now sitting in the Gun Hill Apartments' parking lot behind newly erected fences, and a large truck was seen backing into the property on October 1st. Epilogue (2012): Demolition began in February 2009 and has since been completed. The demolition and subsequent cleanup went far over budget and the condos that were planned to be constructed on the site in late 2009 or early 2010 have not begun construction at all. The condo plans may have been abandoned entirely. Currently, the former Ithaca Gun Factory site sits as an empty lot and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
