The Woodlawn Hotel was built in 1886 and opened in 1889 as a resort for the wealthy few of DC. In 1906, it was bought by the Bullard family, and began its slow transformation into Chesnut Lodge. Dr. Bullard employed the site to treat nervous and mental diseases through a combination of psychoanalysis and occupational therapy. For years, it was suggested that government activity took place at Chestnut Lodge - and of course, when the government is involved, that means allegations of drugging, brainwashing, and torture. The famous Dr. Freida Fromm-Reichman was a member of the staff. The Bullards family continued to own and operate the hospital until 1997, when the property was purchased by the CPC with an intent to continue hospital use, but CPC filed for bankruptcy and the hospital closed in 2001. It was purchased by the Washington Waldorf School (a small private K-12 school in Bethesda) in 2001, but then sold to it's current developers in 2003.

     Future Plans
More resedential development, pending a permit grant.
The back buildings will most likely be demolished, while the more historically significant Woodlawn Hotel building and several others will be saved, but put through a meatgrinder and turned into yuppie heaven.

That famous Woodlawn building will become:

    Seven luxury condos!!

The developer seems like a decent guy:

"I want to make sure everyone on the City Council objectively looks at this project... If they turn this down or start cutting it, they should be shot."
    -Monty Levine
