Outside looks surprisingly good. Some of inside is in good condition, although tremendous damage has been done by police and fire dept. training, vandals, and a large fire.

Type: Building
Status: Demolished
Accessibility: Reasonably easy - entrances easy to spot, just watch for police on location and on nearby streets
Recommendation: check it out if you're nearby

Many medical supplies and heavy equipment left (X-Rays, CAT Scans, etc). Patient records remain. Much left intact, although more disappears every time they initiate a new reconditioning project.

Small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches) can be of assistance. If dusty air bothers you bring a mask, but not necessary. More protective clothing not a bad idea due to condition and amount of glass and debris. Definitely wear thick shoes as needles and scalpels litter some rooms. Also suggest some form of defense - although the building is dramatically more secured in the past year, it was rumored to be a crackhouse at points in its history.

Opened 1895, named after Julia F. Burnham. Additions made until late 1950s, when first financial troubles encountered. Last construction completed in 1969. Was on hard times throughout 1970s. Closed and reopened several times throughout 1980s. Closed permanently in 1992. Abandoned since.

Pending, but demolition is to start again on March 3, 2004 if City of Champaign has its way.
