The most interesting part of this tunnel is that it breaks into two sections. Going north to south, the tunnel starts of blasted out of the rock cliff. It goes about 75-100 yards and then enters an open chamber (now filled with local garbage and debris) that is about 30-40ft across and then continues into the 2nd half. The tunnel in this 2nd section is done in brick and really looks the part of an early 20th century tunnel. It's worth a look and its a short walk from a public parking lot.

The Delware & Hudson railroad originally blasted this tunnel out for the north-south rail passage going from Montreal to Albany. Since Port Henry was a major supply hub for iron ore, it was a big deal. But, before the tunnel could be used, the Bay State Iron company began to fill in the Port Henry waterfront making the tunnel redundant as the rail line could skirt the cliffs without going through them. Since the early 1900's, this tunnel has sat abandoned.
