| | Craning in an active amusement park? < on 10/23/2011 5:59 AM >
| | | Hey guys, I don't know if Anyones ever done something like this, but I was wondering what you guys think about climbing up a crane in an active construction area in an amusement park? I don't even know for sure if it would be possible or worth the risk because of the 24h security, It's been bothering me, since I live right near it, and it tempts me on the way to school everyday, haha Thanks!

Sounds like an awesome place! Do your homework before going in. Find out as much about the site security as you can. If you still don't feel comfortable, don't go in. If you do go in, bring a reliable partner. I used to live in Toronto. Can you give me a vague idea where this place is? [last edit 10/23/2011 3:11 PM by GearheadExplorer85 - edited 1 times]

| | | It's the park near the 400 highways just outside the city, I don't know how specific I wanna be here but, the particular crane is currently building a massive new coaster for next year, and it would be amazing to get up there...

Exploring active theme parks has its risks. Check their forums to make sure they don't know about other explorers getting in and therefore making plans to step up security. That sucked that one time. The usual 'sneak in, look around, go for it' applies. Just spend longer on steps 1 & 2 to enjoy step 3.

| | | Scout it beforehand and see what time the driving/walking patrols usually go by. There shouldn't be too much security. Climb the rollercoasters while you're there!

| | | I Figured with the security, climbing the coasters seems like a really good time, If caught, would the park itself prosecute? or just a simple trespass ticket, etc..? I might just forget the crane Idea, as I've only done one crane before (about 15 stories) and this one is almost 350ft. So pretty much me being stupid/hopeful...

| | | Hey sorry wanted to post this sooner incase you already went but I was too fresh to the site to be allowed to post. A buddy of mine works for a company that specializes in construction site security. I've talked to him about similar things I wanted to do, he always told me be on the lookout for cameras(well.duh). Apparently they usually try to hide them on incredibly tall freestanding temporary poles hoping you wouldn't think to look up and most of the time it's not a DVR it's a live feed that's monitored.
If your boots aren't muddy and your pants aren't ripped you did something wrong. http://www.DJDraco.com http://www.flickr.com/djdraco |

| | | I climbed a crane in a zoo last week (not toronto). If you're quiet, know where security is, and don't excite the gorillas you should be fine.

| | | I would not risk it. That park you speak of has 24 hour security on site at all times, (also has armed response) and the local police have a helicopter which patrols the park area regularly for them as well. There is also motion alarms scattered throughout the park, on the grounds and around the fence perimeter. Oh, and there are parking lot cameras and internal park cameras with motion alarms- and a 24 hour monitoring centre. All in all, probably a bad idea, there are more than enough other cranes in the region which would be less high risk. And yes, the "park" would throw the book at you as much as they could. So, if you do it, and don't get arrested, you must post pics. Otherwise, read about you in the local paper soon enough.

Sounds like the average regional theme park.

| | | Haha, wow... Really? I don't know If i'm ballsy enough for that just yet The "park" we speak of was actually a former employer of mine, and I regularly snuck into the park through a back entrance to get to work faster, however that was during the day... so I don't really know What are your opinions on the other "attractions" in the park itself? Worth it?

| | | I was actually in that park today- its not even a tower crane with a internal ladder system- its a portable crawler crane- with cab on the ground- there is no "simple" way to climb this thing. (well there is, but one mis-step and its game over) Also, the main park security office, main employee path and the 24 hour staffed employee gate are literally in between/beside this crane.. Both respective buildings within 100 or so feet of it- staff path is literally a few feet away- so I am sure its well watched.
Image of crane (grabbed off the amusement park's website)
Yes, it is considerably taller than drop zone. My friends who were on it (drop zone) confirmed this today. Click here for the uber high res image. http://www.leviath...%20Oct1%20004b.jpg
Also regarding "trying" to keep this location a secret- there is only one large amusement park anywhere near Toronto- scratch that, make that Ontario.. So trying to keep this location under wraps is rather moot. [last edit 10/30/2011 2:00 AM by unlisted - edited 1 times]

| | | Wait until the roller coaster is more complete. With those type of cranes, watch out for fog/dew, they get reeeal slippery.

A very good point. Maintain a 3 point contact at all times, wear some good climbing gloves, high top boots, and try to climb when it's dry.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |
