There's a hotel in downtown Atlanta, that I've been in for Dragon*con and people have said before that they leave the roof door unlocked sometimes. I'd love to go up there, but it's something like 35 stories high and I'm terrified that I'll step a foot out and the wind will simultaneously blow the door closed, my phone and camera over the side of the building, and me to the ground (I'm terrified of heights, but love the view, so I'm still prone to do something like this). How strong is the wind usually on roofs? And are there any regular safety precautions you'd take aside from making sure the door doesn't close?

EDIT: Scratch that, I found this thread (http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=93397) but I'd still gladly accept any suggestions

Wind at 350/400 feet is a non issue (unless you do something stupid like go out in a hurricane) its really not going to be much difference from ground level.

Other safety precautions include not falling off the edge and not pointing your tripod at the police helicopter like it's a SAM (Surface to Air Missile)

Are you SERIOUS?!?!

Yea,

1. Lets walk into an active building with a harness and slings.
2. Lets get CAUGHT wearing a harness on top of a roof you're not supposed to be on top of....
3. Most roofs aren't going to have anchors set up to clip into
4. If you don't know what you're doing - setting up your own fall protection is... iffy at best, life threateningly stupid at worse.
5. If you do (somehow?!?! manage??) to fall, AND the protection holds you'll probably end up dying from hanging on the rope anyway. (someone please remind me what the actual term is)

This isn't a damn spy mission people - you're standing on a flat surface - do you put on a harness and set anchors when your standing on the sidewalk? If you can manage to not fall off the 6" drop of a sidewalk the edge of a building is no different... and if you do have problems with falling off of sidewalks I recommend staying off of roof tops!

My procedure for roof tops:
1. Notice where building ends.
2. Be aware of any slopes, curbs or loose surfaces and decide what a "safe" distance is - sometimes you sit with your legs hanging off the building - sometimes you stay 3' away from the edge.

Sure I am serious, he is afraid of roofs, so he should wear one of these.
Actually most of these are easy to put one. Also, if you don't have room to get over the edge, you don't need a fall protection.

When I do tower climbing, I have three different connection to the tower.
One is around the tower, makes it easier to climb, one is a fall protection, and one is an anchor.
When the anchor is connected to the tower, the fall protection only would do something when this anchor fails.
So if he has an anchor the furthest he could fall would be from standing to the ground he is standing on.

The anchor in general don't give you the chance to get into a dangerous situation.

Now of course you have to see this also as a funny statement, I didn't say he should go with a harness and all the stuff that comes with it through a hotel lobby, people would look funny at him.

To get on a tower, I need the band that goes around the tower, the anchor, actually two of them, and the fall protection. Also a helmet, and some gloves, so you are not very fast.

But if he is afraid of height, a harness with an anchor can help.

Suspension trauma, is real and if no one rescues you within a few minutes of it's onset, you are dead. Don't count on gear to save you from your own bad judgement.
Harnesses are a pain and far from foolproof. No one in there right mind wears these if they don't have to, especially for walking.

No such thing as worry free climbing. You need to stay sharp and focused at all times. If you can't, don't!

Your security measures were inadequate.

I am not afraid of roofs...... getting up high on top of buildings gives me an adrenaline rush like none other. I don't even know what suggested I was afraid of roofs. I don't even....

And everyone who is telling me to go out and be wild because I am young, I am already one step ahead of you ;)

Hotels are particularly easy because staff don't know all the guests because they rotate so frequently.

confidence. must have. but be casual. if you loiter or fumble about you attract instant attention.

easy equation for rooftops is to know where lift is, head to lift, best go to about third floor from top so if you are watched which floor you exit from it's not immediately obvious where you may have gone, head to stairwell, make entry to rooftop.

always always always check door handle on both sides of doors you pass through to be sure they open...lots of buildings will allow entry from floor to fire escape but not from stairwell back in - leaving you to walk x amount of flights of stairs to exit.

then common sense prevails, i've only been on two rooftops out of 'lots' that didn't have a waist height wall or barrier around the edge..but simply be safe and stay a safe distance from the edge if there isn't a barrier.

As mentioned always plan your exit. know where the fire stairs exit from building so when leaving it's not a surprise when you end up somewhere populated. you can walk around or behind building and note fire exits. most buildings will have two sets of stairs at either end/side of building, become as familiar as you can on how to get from one to the other if needed.

I tend to take a photo of a few corridors, if there is a window facing outside from the lift area i take a shot there too so i can say that's what i came for. i also often research the building a bit if i think it will help, check if the hotel has any historical stories, architectual interest and note it so when asked you have a weak but plausible alibi for wanting to take photos.

i often tend to look from rooftop or any windows into surrounding streets every 20mins or so just to keep track if any smurfs rock up.

love rooftops, once you get a taste for them they become addictive.

I forget it sometimes too.

"Notice where the roof ends." ? lmao! Very important.

Be aware of any sky lights, center building courtyards or holes. Go slow, and look out for stuff sticking out, up, and wires. Don't run.

I have ample experience getting up in high places

Go on google earth, find out what stairwell goes to the roof, or what corner of the building it's on. ( they don't always branch from stairwells) Pack a backpack with a climbing harness, 5 or so climbing caribieners, and 50 ft. Of rope.

Find out if the elevators have cameras. Many do. Take the stairs if they do. (I've never seen cams in stairs) get as high up as possible. Now look for well secured (has a deadbolt) doors, near where the enterance is (the one you saw on. Google earth) open that door, climb a ladder/stairs and enjoy the view. Don your harness and secure yourself to something if you plan on going near the edge, as it can get really fucking windy up there.

Enjoy.

When I used to work at the royal bank plaza in Toronto years ago, i went to the roof of the taller tower in the middle of the night. There is a metal grate on one half of the rooftop that had two wide and deep pits which used to house the chillers and boilers. There were no rails to protect anyone from falling. Just another thing to watch out for when on a rooftop.

Here are some pictures from back in the day. These were taken in the middle of the winter with high winds, so the quality isn't that great. Hopefully it will provide further inspiration

- This is me on the roof of the taller south tower looking down at the north tower.

- First Canadian Place on the left and Commerce Court on the right.

- Condo development next to the Air Canada Centre

- Not sure which way I was facing in this picture

- Looking down at Front St. across from Union Station

You're not in a brothel lineup. You're in a two way business discussion.
