| | | Getting on the tallest roof I have ever been on, tips? < on 10/8/2011 10:02 PM >
| | | So I few weeks ago I scouted the tallest hotel here, I figured out exactly how to get on the roof, tonight I am planning on actually going out and I am gonna try to get on the roof, I have a backup story in case anyone catches me, and I have a friend I can call who can play along with the story (basically he is a photographer from out of state staying at that hotel, and I replied to a craigslist ad he posted asking a local to come show him around the city at night and shot some photos with him, I am meeting him at his room in the hotel, I am skeptical about his legitimacy) . I am just curious what I should do if I get to the door or hatch that leads out to the roof open it and it sets an alarm off, remember I am only 16 so I do look a little out of place wandering around a hotel, although when I went to scout it nobody gave me a second glance. Any tips you can give a first timer would be great, I have infiltrated buildings before and gotten on their roofs, but those were only 5 - 8 story buildings, this building is 20 stories, it will be my largest yet. Thanks for any tips or advice!

| | | You should meet this guy in a public part of the hotel, not his room. As for the roof, even if an alarm goes off, you should be fine. In my experience, you can just tell them that you were taking pictures, and that you'll be going now, and the worst that they'll do is ask you to leave.

| | | I'm confused...Is your friend actually staying in the hotel or is this the actual cover story that you have come up with? I've gone roof topping once and the success rate was hit and miss. I do recommend bringing either a wedge to keep the door open or an old hotel room key to slide between the latch and the lock to keep your exit route open at all times. Don't close the door behind you unless you know its still unlocked. You don't want to spend the night up on the roof. lol.
Tripods are good. And if you get caught you might as well come clean and tell the security guard what you're doing, just don't mention this website (ever!)...

| | | Climb the fucking hotel and stop posting about it. It's a hotel, go in, they won't question you, and find a way to the top. Thread done.

| | | If you set off an alarm, run down a few flights of stairs, cross over on the 16th or 17th floor to a different stairwell, and then walk down with everyone else looking confused. Bring a student ID or something to card the door with too. Don't bring a screw driver or painters tool or slim jim or anything like that.

| | | Hey everyone, thanks for the advice! I ended up getting rained out last night. But I will take everything you guys said into consideration, and I will have pictures up as soon as I get on the roof! Any more advice is still welcomed, thanks! Oh and just to clear things up, I wasn't really going to meet someone off of Craigslist at the hotel, that was just a cover story for why I was in the hotel. | | | That's a pretty skeezy cover story. Hotel guy: "What are you doing here?" Urbexkeith: "I'm just meeting up with a guy I met on Craigslist." Hotel guy: "Uh-huh. How old are you?" Urbexkeith: "Uh, 16." Hotel guy: "Hold on right there. I need to make a phone call." Cop: "Okay, which room number are you going to, son?"

Know what would be a better cover story? "I wanted to take some photos from your roof".

Although now that I think about it, it does make more sense to just be honest though.

Will most likely result in being escorted off the property, you might even get lucky and be allowed up there. If you have some convoluted story about meeting up with someone from craigslist if/when they realise that's bullshit it's going to be much harder to talk your way out. A friend of mine used the "I wanted to get to your roof" line after being caught on the top floor of the largest building in Perth, was escorted out and asked not to come back.

| | | There are certain types of antennae on roofs that cause headaches as a symptom of RF exposure. The mechanism of damage is bulk heating, so don't worry about growing extra eyes. If you feel peculiarly warm or get headaches when standing in the main beam of a dish, move away from it.
