Leyden Ruins, CO

This is the place I cut my urban exploration teeth on and a fun, easily accessible place if you want to take some creepy pictures. It's supposedly a former farm turned KKK hideout just west of the tiny town of Leyden. If you didn't know, Colorado was a haven for the KKK in the early 20th century. Governor Stapleton (the same Stapleton our old airport was named after) was a full-fledged member. It has since been left to decay and is now a hangout for punks, druggies, and the occasional satanic cult.

The first time I went up there was in October, right before Halloween. I don't know if it's because of the history of the place or if it's because there was a ritual done on the premises, but the entire place had a very eerie feeling to it. Second time was in January. Not nearly as eerie but still a bit spooky.

Wow....interesting place.

Please tell me that was not a piece of jaw/teeth on the board in one photo... I'm scared to even ask!

Nice photos. I love the crooked tree in the light!

I'm typing this with my middle fingers.
I love the smell of mold in the fall.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it definitely was. There were animal bones arranged in a pile, the board was arranged in an X with the red candle on top of it with rope bound to it and a shattered mirror. My friend saw that and immediately destroyed it, saying it was part of a satanic ritual. I don't know what kind of animal the bones were from (probably a rabbit or other small mammal).

So according to my friend, the city of Arvada has recently torn down the ruins. Her father wanted to see them, they drove past, and apparently they're gone.

a body was found at the ruins. Police haven't said if it is Jessica Ridgway. It seems the body was found near the first photo in the set of this thread. The same structure is pictured in the article.

So apparently the ruins haven't been torn down. They were in the paper yesterday.

They're not confirming yet that it's her body - just saying they found a dismembered body near those ruins while searching for Jessica. They should have an ID sometime tomorrow.

Totally sick and sad situation, regardless. Kind of creeps me out personally, too - I've been crawling around a lot of those abandoned mine sites lately...never would have expected to find something like THAT there...

It is always possible with the places that we all end up in. Not the first time a body has been dumped in an abandoned building...

My first thought was of the ruins when I heard there was a body in that park. The first pic is of a collection of ruins on the north of the road, btw. Not part of the park. I wonder if my friend went down the wrong road?

They arrested someone today. Rumor is that either himself or his mother turned him in.

I've asked the question before of what we should do if we discovered a body at a site, but what should we do if people disappear near sites? As people who might have the only thorough knowledge of some sites, we could have invaluable knowledge in some places that could mean the difference of a few hours to a few days. In some cases it could also mean life and death. Investigators may not appreciate our assistance, but it may also be the best as some of us tend to chill in some sketch places and know them like the back of our hands.

Only problem with that, is that it makes us look suspicious.

When they found Jessica's backpack in Superior near the mine sites that I had just visited, I went ahead an emailed the tip line about what I knew. I figured risking a trespassing charge was worth it in this case. I offered to take them around that area if they wanted, but I never heard back.

Ya, when the showed on the news the area they were combing for clues (probably the body), I thought nothing of it. Then a few days later, when I heard where they found her, and thinking back on the area they there looking. I was like duh, I can't believe I didn't think to go check that place.
