More from our trip to the Indian Residential School. Enjoy!

Below is part 1 - i accidentally only posted it on a thread for full members so here is is again publicly viewable.

Edit - remove the word fun because apparently one should never describe their trip to a residential school as fun.

More fun from our trip to the Indian Residential School. Enjoy!

You know, I don't think there was that much fun to be had there. Certainly not in the memories of the people who were forced to go there, or for the parents and communities they were taken from.

You might consider thinking a bit about the memory of suffering that is embodied in the place you've gone, and reflect that accordingly in your actions and in your words about it.

Kowalski

I only used the term fun to explain our trip there and that is all. I have fun exploring - I explore because I enjoy it.

I am fully aware of how terrible the history this place has had. I walked through the halls of this building and many others with the knowledge of what occurred here. I have gone to great lengths to study and understand the Residential School System - I toured one when they were still open. I spent 8 years of my life in a relationship with a Métis woman. Many of her relatives were victims of the abuse of the Residential School System. I have spoken to them at great lengths about the horrors they experienced there. If you look at my first entry there are references to the negative history of a facility like this.

I also greatly enjoyed exploring The Weyburn Mental Hospital. I too know of the horrors that occurred there and my writings on the hospital and our experiences make reference to what happened there many times.

So I would like to thank you for assuming that I am some ignorant noob that needs to be chastised for using the word fun to explain my experience. I never once said it was fun to be a student of a Residential School, but thanks for assuming. I have been actively exploring for over 10 years and have seen some great locations – even our negative history is fascinating to me and I feel it should not be forgotten. If we forget as a society our mistakes then we risk making the same mistakes over again. I also have deep respect for these locations – I come from the old school of exploring much like you.

Thanks
Corey

I agree with all of this and I'm sorry if I've been harsh, but I still don't agree that visiting a place like that one should ever be "fun."

I understand what you're trying to say with the word, but it's flip and dumb and the result of the pollution of your actual understanding of the place by the trifling dictates of 'UE'. Don't fall into that trap. You're in a position to actually be able to say something about the place, and you shouldn't just skip out on that because it's easier to post a bunch of generic photos of anonymous decay and say "hey, look at me UER forum! I explored and photographed somewhere cool." It's a narcissistic enjoyment, and one you shouldn't embrace.

Why shouldn’t be fun or perhaps a little better descriptor would be enjoyable? I explore because it is fun and enjoyable to me. That doesn’t mean I don’t have respect or an understanding of what occurred in these locations. The main reason I explore is to document our lesser known or appreciated history – I feel it is important to remember our past and I do my part to help that. In fact the day that I don’t have fun or enjoyment anymore is they day I will no longer be an explorer.

I agree that they way I set up this thread doesn’t say hey – here is some history – here is why it is a sombre place to visit. However if you took the time to review my blog or my site you would see that I always have a detailed write up on locations. Check out the first link and the write up.

I just decided over this weekend that I don’t contribute to UER much and I wanted to show a little of my work and that I am still active. I didn’t take the time to have a big write up on UER itself – just a short message and some links. Look over some of my other work.

http://www.saskurb...eyburn/weyburn.htm
Check out my write up on Weyburn

http://blog.saskur...06/forgotten-mine/
Check out my write up on the Forgotten Mine that I have been documenting for years.

I am far from being stuck in the trap of “hey, look at me UER foum! I explored and photographed somewhere cool”. I spend countless hours researching locations and getting some history. I don’t explore for acceptance on this site – I explore for myself and to document our history that is danger of being forgotten.

Kowaski – maybe you should be a little more accepting of people on this site. Maybe ask a couple questions instead of making conclusions on people based on a single string of photos. Try looking a little deeper before you cast judgement.

Great pictures! If I am interested in learning more about the building that was photographed I will be sure to spend my own time researching it and its history rather than asking requiring you to weigh in on your thoughts and opinions of such a structure.

But in light of hurt feelings and deep emotions I would like to request that before you post any more risque pictures, if you would please consult the forums so that we can draft a set of rigid expectations for you to report back to us with. I needn't express to you how taking pictures of a building without a thorough documentation of all of the events that occurred there and the social climate in which such a building was erected is unsatisfactory. You can't expect all of the other members to research every location that you photograph.

Also, seem less happy if the building carries with it a negative social stigma.

Kind Regards,
The Authorities

I am glad you liked the photos. It's not that I don't expect some criticism. When I drafted the second entry to the blog I didn't put a write up in because I had a fairly large writeup on part 1. Anyways I only take offense to someone who says I don't do any research when if they had taken a minute to look at anything else on my blog they would see why there was no write up on this particular location.

But whatever - it wouldn't be UER if it was any different so flame on!!

"It sounds perhaps callous - I don't know - but it was enormously exciting and tremendous fun." - Flying Officer Brian Kingcome on the Battle of Britain, 1940

Clearly, this officer should have been much more respectful of the tens of thousands of people killed. What an asshole.

Cor726: Thanks for the look inside. Though I'm generally familiar with the Residential School history, the thought that the schools might still be there abandoned never crossed my mind.

I have been looking for a remaining school for several years however most of them are gone.

The majority of them were on Reservations so when they were closed they were typically given to the bands to use if they wished to. Most First Nation Groups wanted to get rid of the bad memories and insisted they be demolished. Gordon FN for example was demolished, same with Lebret. There isn't one left in Saskatchewan that still stands from what I am aware of.

This one doesn't sit on Indian land so I can only assume that is why it still exists. It is an interesting relic of a time when First Nations peoples didn't have any rights and were treated very poorly.

Nothing should be described as fun in North America as most luxuries we currently enjoy was built either on the backs of slaves or stolen from indigenous people. Think about it.

For those interested in the residential schools, here's one in Spanish, Ontario we visited.

We swear, in the presence of witnesses, signed in blood that we did not have ANY fun during this exploration.

There's the link to it on the DB. Thanks goes out to Cor762 and Photoseeker for confirming that this amazing place is still there. I'll always remember the day I went to explore it. It truly was surreal! I also must thank Curios for pointing me in the right direction a few years ago. Happy Holidays, best of luck in the new year and keep on explorin'

As a native Inuit i have to say id burn that place and everything around it if i had the chance to visit and my stories would be of the pain and suffering inflicted on all involved with anything to do with the school...Fun...id never associate it unless I was roasting marshmallows on the ashes of that place and the bodies of those keepers of man.To much...it was to much!!!
