I sniffed at the vent on the top and it doesn't smell like sewage or anything for that matter. Is there something cool underground here?

Cool big door with a padlock on top of a weird looking concrete thing. I think the odds are pretty good.

I saw something similar years ago when I was exploring the storm drain system in a new housing estate. If it's anything like that then it'll be a junction for a whole bunch of drains.

Since there's a ventilation outlet on top you should be aware of fumes if you do go in there. If you're inside and you feel lightheaded or nauseous then gtfo.

I'm not sure. I didn't notice it until I looked at the pic later. It looks like a rj12 (phone cord)

Maybe an alarm? There's a very similar padlocked steel door setup on sewage pumping stations on the Gold Coast (no, I haven't been in them, so take this advice as you see fit). Those ones are alarmed and their status seems to be routinely monitored, given the yagi antenna and the rather obvious red "caution" light. If/when you decide to go in, it may be an idea to open it, close it, then lay in wait outside the facility to see if anyone rocks up.

(edit: guess you guys got out without anyone rocking up. nevermind )

Note that the access hatch is very obviously weather sealed to keep surface water and debris out. Door covers over the frame, and is caulked at the interface to the concrete. The wire is likely to a contact for security. It is likely that it would be a local type alarm and/or indicator, not something remotely monitored, but it would give indication of tampering. The concrete structure itself is a potable water cistern of unknown depth. Unlikely to be interesting, likely filled 80% or better with water, and messing around with entering it would bring some stiff charges. The presence of the electrical boxes means likely a small booster pump (2" to 6" discharge line) to help feed pressure in the local area. Nothing exotic, nothing large. This is the same idea as a water tower, but smaller and pumped instead of gravity feed.

Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy. -George Carlin (1937 - 2008)

It could be a water tank, but to be a useful underground water tank it would need to be on a hill or attached to pumps for a near by building for fire suppression. But more than likely its a Lift Station, they are sewage pumping stations, pumps from another lift station a ways away pumps into it and then its pumps again further down the line. I bet there is a back board and power meter some were close by.

All men are created equal, then a few become firefighters.

Interesting to note is the lack of fencing. Generally reservoir tanks have some sort of perimeter restrictions.

No but what vectored approach said makes a lot of sense. Doesn't seem worth it.

Its gotta be a water reservoir. I've seen many like it, and they are always locked. You sure that white thing is a vent? Kind of looks like a vertical motor for a pump.
