It does seem like Oregon does demolish stuff pretty quickly after it's abandoned.
But not always. The Mccormick and baxter site was open for years, and heavily tagged up. It was abandoned in 1992, and finally demolished in 2009... And yet, there is still a dock, and other noise there....
|
Oh god, that site I would not touch with a 100 foot pole because of the chemicals used there.
BTW, what is the word on the abandoned hotel, anyone been there? All I see is fence, and I have never heard any reports of trespass on N disp. on my scanner. What gives?
|
I've heard it alarmed and used for storage, but I need to get an exact address to figure out it.

Actually, in the last few years, all the nasties have been cleaned up, yet they never demolished the powerhouse and other out buildings. Well, at least, until UP bought the property, thats when they demoed the stuff. Probably will soon be a housing area or an athletic field....
Speaking of Demo. There is a three block area in NE that is fenced off full of empty houses that are slated for demo later this year. Someone should go check it out. It's probably not that exciting, since they are just abandoned old houses... But hey, someone might like it.

| | | Yeah, I have to say, I have been keeping my eyes very open. I'm in Portland right now as we speak, and I tend to be able to spot things. So far, nothing.

| | | So McCormick & Baxter was finally demo'd? That sucks. I was there earlier this summer and the whole property had a brand new chain link fence around it. That's not to say it didn't already have about 100 holes in it. Last year someone went to the trouble of sweeping the big building out and building skate ramps and such. Pretty sweet setup actually. Then some asshole dumped truckloads of trash inside and set it on fire, which in turn collapsed most of the ramps. Anyhoo, bummer about that place being gone. I also read somewhere that the Army Corps of Engineers are finally gonna knock down the Gasworks to build a new dredging facility. But considering how fucked the soil is over there and how astronomically expensive a cleanup would be, I'd bet it won't be happening anytime soon. Speaking of funding, I'm still waiting for PDX law enforcement to take a hit so we can get in a certain mill on the waterfront... EDIT: Also, not to fan the fire or anything, but if you can't find cool sites in Oregon outside the metro, you're not trying very hard. HHmm, I dunno about that. From what I heard that the gasworks building is listed as a historic building. But then again, anything is possible

Well, considering part of that old mill is actually a Police station, that might not happen in the near future. There is also plans by Hoyt St. Development company to restore the old mill into a mixed use space for residential, commercial and retail space. Unfortunately the economy has put the brakes on that for the time being.

| | | I moved out to Eugene, OR about a year ago for grad school and have found jack shit to explore as well. It's disheartening to hear that there isn't much in Portland, either. That being said, I'm willing to drive a few hours for some good UE if anyone knows of some decent spots. Used to live in Davenport, IA. All my old UE haunts there have been torn down (Moline Public Hospital, an amazing old factory on the Mississippi, abandoned nursing home, etc.) So even when I go home I can't really get a fix. It's been too long, fellas, lets get an expedition going.

There are a few places on the database. I'm not familiar with any of them, however. Anybody on here have a spot they'd suggest?

I feel ya, man. I miss all my old abandoned hangouts from the east coast, but those places were getting too hot anyway. I don't have a set of wheels right now, but if you do and don't mind driving up to Portland and picking me up, i'd be down for long hours of scouring the state. I could split gas and whatever.

It's a bit iffy for me right now, too. My car isn't always reliable (1965 Volkswagen Bus) but once I get things sorted out I'm totally down.
