| | | When Dora & I were checking out an old farm house last week, we saw this strange box strapped to a tree nearby. It was pointing at the house. Is there a camera in there or some sort of motion sensor?

| | | Looks like a motion sensor. It has a speaker, did an alarm go off? It doesn't look like it has outside power, you could go up to it and take out the batteries if you were really worried. Take the batteries, move off-site, see if anybody comes to replace them.

| | | No alarm went off, no wires leading to it, nobody showed up... the base of the tree is probably about 5 feet thick, and I'm not a good climber. We weren't worried since we didn't actually go into the place, just curious if anyone knew what it was!

| | | They have these all over Lafayette CO, they're motion activated cameras. The ones around here only go off at night. When they sense motion they flash and take a picture, then a voice says "The Lafayette police department has been notified, please leave immediately". It's just a bluff after setting one off my friends and I hung around for a couple hours and no one came. Every once and a while a city worker comes around sits at the base of the poll or tree and downloads the photos on to a laptop. They are mainly used to scare off and catch vandals. I wouldn't worry about it, especially during the day.

| | | Posted by junkyard I bet if someone chainsawed the tree down and it fell in the woods, nobody would see it. |
But would someone hear the tree fall?

| | | Nope, they wouldn't hear it. The chainsaws and dynamite would drown the sound out. I have all the answers to the age old questions........The light in the fridge is always off I found out. We hit it with a tanker full of Hydrazine at like 70. It's just off. We found that was the quickest way of opening it to see if it was still on. We're a bit like Myth Busters, but more appliance busters.

Wow I can't believe you haven't mentioned the word "beer" in a whole thread!

| | | Wow guys, thanks for all your helpful and not-so-helpful (but funny) comments! n n I wasn't too worried about it, and thought that if it was a camera of some type that they would laugh at us for taking pictures of the house and then of the camera! Seems like my threads frequently get hijacked!

DOH!!!
| | Re: Were we being watched? <Reply # 19 on 5/22/2009 4:45 PM >
| | | Hey there kids That sure has all the makings of one of them motion activated cameras all right. It does not look like the models that are used by the police department, it looks a lot more like the type used by wildlife researchers. They are often placed in locations where someone is trying to determine what type of wildlife is in the area. I worked with a professor during my undergrad and we placed a bunch of these devices along the Arizona/Mexico border. The professor expected to find that mountain lions were in the area killing cattle but to our surprise we found JUGUARS were the culprit!!! It turned into a huge news story that Arizona actually had a small jaguar population, very cool!!!
