Well, if you get caught with lockpicks you're in felony-flavor shit instead of 'har har go away' shit.

I carry picks, and I have needed them in the past. It is a much better option than breaking something.

I don't see what a jackknife could have to do with lock picks.
Anyway, carrying around lock picks is very helpful, but that's only if you never get caught with them.

dunno if that was a serious comment or not, But the Jackknife is a small folding lockpick set that looks like a small keychain pocket knife..
Personally I almost always have my jackknife on me and normally have my home made diamond pick somewhere as well, if I know I am going to be doing something illegal I generally will leave'em in the car but on a daily basis I have them on me and they have come in handy fairly often (random friends locking themselves outa the house or something) On random traffic stops where a cop has decided to search me (granted I may look like a dirtbag mountain man) they have always in the past mistaken the jackknife picks for a small knife and I never have bothered to correct them on that fact..

On another note, when I was moving to LA from Chicago I had a Uhaul trailer with a lock I lost the key to a few years back.. At the California State Agricultural checkpoint stop thing they wanted me to open the trailer, so I had to get out in front of like 6 cops or whatever they were and pick the lock to show them the insides.. Luckly I can open that lock about as fast as someone could with a key so I don't think most of them noticed but I sure as hell got a few odd looks, nobody said anything though...

My guess is, it's used for holding the key things, so they don't bend.

I'd second that it's some kinda handle.. The only one you /really/ need from that set is the diamond pick.. I wouldn't really bother with the rest..

The brass thing is a handle, so you can slide the picks in and have more surface area to grab. But I also think that handles make it harder to get the feel for a lock so I wouldn't even bother with it. I doubt you will ever need that many picks, most people have a couple of styles that they feel comfortable with and stick to those. Just play around and see what feels best to you (I like rakes, the W shaped or the snake).

I would recommend trying to find an entry without the use of picks, but if you feel you must I'd hide them outside the entrance just in case you are caught or if you really want to take them with you once you are in I'd put them in something drab but secure and in an easily accessed pocket so you can drop them if you have to.

I think this is what the op what referring to as a jackknife pick.

I think you should try to get in without a pick first. If there is no other way then you should think about bringing one along but only the bare minimum. I prefer the snake rack and a wrench but remember only carry what you want to explain to the police. Getting caught with a pick probably isn't going to end well for you. The benefit of scouting the location before using the picks is that you can hopefully gauge your risk.

BTW, only ever think about bringing a pick along with you only when you actually know how to use it otherwise your only wasting your time. It wouldn't be worth the risk.

If your going into an abandonment i have found that you usually don't need a lockpick, I usually just bring a rusty rebar i have to pry open doors with and it looks so old that the few times i've been chased by the popo I've just ditched it in the bushes and gone back for it later.

Dude if you buy lock picks NEVER bring them on a u.e. too dangerous. Still buy lock picks that way you can practice picking and then when you are good at that try a paperclip and hair pin. When you get good with those just carry a few everwhere. I can easily pick a lock with a pin and a paperclip which takes practice but is well worth being able to do so. Pins and clips dont look supishious when just laying in the ground after use. As i said well worth the knowledge.

Yep everyone's right it's a handle, and it's super useless. takes way too much time to use. If you find that the picks hurt your hands, just wrap the handles with electrical tape.

I agree, heck you don't even need the hair pin, just a pocket full of heavy duty paper clips should do the trick.

you can make:
most rakes with a paper clip
short hook
half diamond
tension wrench

which is all you need for most locks. just keep up the practice!

I teach lockpicking at most cons (and am a founding member of one of the largest sport lockpicking associations) You might want to know that the laws pertaining to carrying picks vary from state to state.

But, they are all the same with regard to one particular detail: If you are caught carrying lock picks while trespassing you will be charged with burglary or breaking and entering. They will throw the book at you.

However, you can join the locksmiths association as an apprentice locksmith and then you get valid ID...

in all my years "exploring" i rarely have ever come across a situations where i needed to pick a lock, theres usually another way around.
BUT i have found having a regular butter knife handy, for those stubborn doors etc. to avoid any extra criminal charges, i keep the butter knife in a "sandwich-sized-tupperware container" along with a granola bar wrapper, a few restaurant butter or jam packets and a crust of bread! this totally looks just like a packed lunch.
"what are you talking about officer?, this is just leftover from my lunch today"!

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Definitely a handle

---------

And Pravus : you might want to try hook picks if you like the diamonds, they are even better for spp. Diamonds are more for raking while hooks give a better feel.

Also : dont bother buying picks, make them with hacksaw blade, you can have as many as you want for nothing, so you can basically throw them away after use

I've been known to take bump keys with me if I scope that place out ahead of time and know which type of lock I need to open. But, that's just because my lock pick skills are lacking...

consider this ... Where Im from carrying things that aid you in breaking and entering into a place. (choosing those words because legally even if you didn't break anything to let you in, you are still tresspassing under a break and enter subsection) You are carrying break and enter tools which is an offence in itself. I don't think it is a serious offence I think it is a summary HOWEVER ... if you are caught and go to court and are released on conditions, one of them may be that you are not allowed to be in possession or use what ever you were found with. Think about that for a second ... if you need to use screw drivers for your job don't carry around screw drivers ... if you need to use lock picks for your job don't carry lock picks, crow bars ect.

It's all fun and games until some one gets shot

consider the finer options here....it is not illegal if you are part of a club that picks locks for sport or a hobby.

well, at least my understanding is there is some greyish loopholium type workable space here. So you'd need to go to a little effort to establish some visible evidence. Set up a domain site, couple of shonky pics of you and friends with pizza box in the background sitting around a house picking for fun etc... add some non existent contact details or mail address etc...

this wont help if you are caught trespassing or in the act etc... but being in transit, if they are concealed reasonabley and are in a bag it may circumvent some degree of trouble down the line.

i know with laser pointers here they were banned but the loophole also includes membership to an astronomy club with some basic principles involved.
