A jackknife lockpick set? Or a set of lockpicks and a jackknife?

In the case of lockpicks, it's 10% tools and 90% practice and knowledge.

And don't carry actual lockpicks, big big trouble. And there's always another way around a lock.

This^^. Lockpicks aren't like a screwdriver where you can just buy it and it'll work. Lockpicking is about finesse and skill, and you'll benefit more from practice and study of the mechanism and picking with paperclips than the coolest tool set on the block. If you want a tool to bypass a lock with no skill, it's called a hammer.

Slipping latches is easier than picking locks, and going around or over a locked door is always best.

EDIT: Look up local laws for CRIMINAL TOOLS. This is why you should think -hard- before carrying ANY sort of tool with you - once the arrest report says "with tools for breaking and entering" you're fucked.

The police would define a set of picks as "burglars tools" and up a misdemeanor trespassing to felony B&E where i'm from.

Why yes, sometimes I do.

If I've already gone without them and ran into a door that needs to be picked with no way around.

I don't see what a jackknife could have to do with lock picks.
Anyway, carrying around lock picks is very helpful, but that's only if you never get caught with them.

interest in exploration led to my flashlight obsession

I bring the picks, and just hid them near the front door(or what ever door needed picked), so if i get spotted, i don't have them on me, but i still have them near if needed.

And same as Corrugated said, its about skill, not tools.

Make your own tools(google it), practice practice practice, and than think about if you want to risk bring picks or not.

Sure, lockpicks can be useful in situations where there are no alternatives.

If the rewards balance the consequences, why not?

maybe, but if you do get caught be assured they never see the actual picks!

Personally, i make picks out of ice, so once i picked the door i leave them on the floor and theres a little patch of water behind me, no trace

-----

But seriously, a pick made of glass would be way cool...

At school when i go to locked places i usually put them in my boots. I once tricked the security guard when he saw me playing in a lock, i put the picks in my pocket before he could see, then he asked me to give him what i had in my pocket and took out a pen... The security guard at school cant frisk us, so i got away pretty easily, even though the principal really thought the pen was meant to open that door and told me i would have been in big trouble if i had succeeded.

I agree with lanceeman for leaving the picks in the location, since they most likely wont get found if they are well hiddem

I think an urban explorer carrying lockpicks is like a boxer wearing brass knuckles under his gloves. Sure he's probably going to win more, but it kind of takes the sport out of it.
