Off the beaten track? There are rail lines close to my house that are used exactly twice a day, by the same train that goes from point A in the morning, and then leaves point B in the afternoon. It's a safe venture, and though the route is generally uneventful, it does pass by some of the usual industrial ephemera that is so much a part of UE. Besides, my son collects rail spikes and flattened coins, so it's a treasure trove of exploring for his wee little adventuring/exploring self.

| | | Aha! I knew I couldn't be the only person with a bottom drawer filled with 40lbs of rail spikes! I consider them souvenirs from various explorations and such - but I have so many of them I'm starting to wonder curiously (as no doubt anybody opening that drawer will do).

| | | My sisters and I used to walk down the tracks near our old place all the time, which also happened to back behind tons of abandonments that are now long gone. On the other hand,I'm pretty creeped out by the tracks near me now. A guy I worked with was killed on them a couple months ago,due to a bad combination of alcohol and an Ipod that he alaways wore. He'd travelled the same route home on them for years, but still nobody's quite sure how it could have happened so yeah,be careful. ~modified for speelin' errer. | | | Seicer is correct. It's called "Walk the rails".
My Grandpa worked for Norfolk & Western for 40 years. I used to go to work with him. I could explore the yard and walk the rails. I miss that. Great fun when you are a kid!

Doesn't really matter, I just had a question. I welcome tips. And I'm not going that far in, just about a mile down. It's still in the inner-city, but there's a nice bridge, and an overpass, so I figure, hey, a railroad bridge and some graffiti might be nice.

Oh yeah: I forgot that. If I "walk the rails"/hobo-explore, I'll most likely see some abandonments. Dang...Now I'm all inspired!

In trainyards there's also the chance of being surprised by a train / partial train, as they shuffle the cars around, and at times just shove em with an engine and let them glide to where they want them.

| | | In my college town, it seemed every year, someone got killed while walking the tracks while listening to a walkman and didn't hear the train whistle. I can't imagine a walkman (yea this was the 90's) would drown out a train horn.

lol wut? A railroad police force? But why, though? Safety? If people had common sense, safety wouldn't be an issue. It's pretty ridiculous...
|
Because just like in the old west, people still rob trains. They break into box cars and steal TVs and junk. Bulls also try and keep riders off so nobody sues the RR when they lose a leg. I've always called it "hoofing it 'cause I got off the train too early, or missed it when it started moving again"

But all the same, there would seem to be more abandonments around railroads than on average, due to the fact railroads are much less utilized today. So, yes, major amtrak lines or whatnot might not be a good idea, but some of the older railroads probably are host to a lot of abandoned rail-road related stuff. Near me there's actually a railroad that used to be in operation a hundred years ago, then was still in operation giving tourist rides of the area until about 10 years ago, and now I think it might be entirely shut down, or if anything does one train ride a year. Ergo, an abandoned train line. There's a building I've been in that I'm trying to figure out what it's purpose is, and there's some abandoned train cars as well that I intend to check out.

| | | ACTAULLY, I would call it "railwalking" But that's just me. There's a kickass RR bridge down here that we jump off. But I prefer the piers at the dam because they're higher & the water is deeper.
