| | | And here it is: Is there a specific term for walking on railroad tracks? I've been thinking about doing it (the track paths in Norwich are AMAZING) but it's been bothering me. I personally think it should be an extension of UE. If it isn't already.

Oh yeah: I forgot that. If I "walk the rails"/hobo-explore, I'll most likely see some abandonments. Dang...Now I'm all inspired!

| | | Learn to walk on the rail, or adjust your pace to match the distance between the ties... that much hiking on gravel will start to suck... I got ~ 20 miles before my calfs started cramping... and it was still 3 more miles to the next town. Also, consider train-hopping, which is currently high on my to-do list.

| | | Railway trespass? In the UK, trespassing & vandalising on the railway is a criminal offence which carries a fine of up to £1,000. Graffiti is also a serious crime which can result in a prison sentence. It's something the BTP are really clamping down upon. Not really relevant to you, I know, but still worth throwing out there.

| | | Personally, I think the trespassing Laws (rail roads) are pretty loose. Me and my friends walked down this old rail track from Harbor Park to the Middlesex Gas Treatment plant (2 miles), and we saw 3 people, 2 cops, one was some worker guy on a ATV, or something. The railroad I'm talking about has a State Property sign slightly hidden by some bushes. We were freaking out when we came back and saw that. So, I'm pretty loose on the rail track law. It should also be noted that the cops in Middletown are pretty much all corrupt bastards, who could really give less of a crap about the law...

| | | Typically no one cares a whole lot if you are walking on the tracks, since you could just be walking a few feet to the side of the tracks and it's just not worth the hassle. However, they do tend to care when you get to a rail yard or other larger railroad property. Then you are not welcome time fun fun buddy.

| | | Right, it IS illegal to be on the tracks, but regular police don't typically enforce that since the railroad has their own national police force.

lol wut? A railroad police force? But why, though? Safety? If people had common sense, safety wouldn't be an issue. It's pretty ridiculous...

| | | Because of jurisdiction, basically. Railroad property crosses everything. They kind of overlap with the laws of the state you're in, and their own federal laws is how I understand it (or rather, how it was briefly explained to me by the federal investigator who detained me).

Ah, that makes a little more sense, I guess. Whoa...This was majorly off topic. So, what's the term for it? Hobo-exploring or Walking the rails?
