| | | | Best job for UE? < on 6/9/2008 9:35 PM >
| | | What is the UEer's dream job? What is the best job to have that will allow you to explore various abandoned, industrial, or otherwise restricted areas? A cop or security guard I'm sure is high up on that list. What about asbestos removal? Firefighter (pre-plans)? Appraiser? Demolition worker? What about jobs that don't require a degree? As cool as it would be, a computer science major like me can't just get a summer job as a cop. I have a (very rich) friend who buys up old factories so that he can restore the old equipment and resell it, sometimes as antiques or sometimes as functional equipment. He owns some beautiful buildings.

| | | I would say cop. I guess an asbestos worker could be interesting, but at the same time, hobbies seem to lose their glow when you're forced to do them to pay the bills.

| | | The job you can handle spending 8hrs a day at without going postal, that gives you the money to pursue your hobbies (be they exploring or something else). Pick something with a decent wage so you can save lots for plane tickets, train tickets, car rentals etc, and something versatile enough that you can work just about anywhere (or telecommute like a champ). Get your CS degree, get some experience under your belt and then move basically anywhere in the world you want and explore like crazy. Decent money, okay work and lots of opportunity. Half the fun of exploring is being places I'm not supposed to be, why would I want to remove that from the experience by having permission to be there?
ps. You don't know a Marko Kovacevic by any chance do you?

| | | I think there were some good ideas along this vein in this thread: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=54353 The problem with getting a security job is that there is a good chance you might get tied to one site for a while. I guess a cop would be better. I have a feeling (as others have said) that dealing with this all the time would probably take all of the fun out of it though.

| | | My job has been pretty rewarding. (safety consultant for a large staffing company) I have to travel all over the state for my job with a lot of down time and paid travel. This has led to a lot of random location scouting and helped me cover the travel cost of getting to locations across the state.

They're called urban planners.. something I would really want to do if I had the brains and dedication for it. They do get paid very well, as it's their job to help the city progress. They help brainstorm critical decisions that keep the city from being subjected to urban decay. The only setback is you're committed to one city. No travel (unless you go for vacation), and you're subjected to a lot of criticism from people who disagree with the ideas you present. There's a lot of pressure to do well, but it seems to be the most rewarding, as you're making a direct impact of the health and integrity of a city.

If you go that route, be careful of your 'openings'! Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | i'll echo what dsankt said and add to it. any job that has you sitting in front of a computer connected to the internet with no restrictions is a good start, and an awesome boss is a great bonus.
i have a friend who works for the federal gov't. he "works" for about 2 hours each day and spends the other 6 researching abandonments. also, being government he gets lots of paid leave to travel and explore.
my job is similar. i work for a small company and spend all day online, and my boss lets me take off whenever i want. getting paid to research and explore is nice.
