place to start?

Like I said on the intro forum, I am new to UE. What would be a good kind of place to start, or would any of you suggest just diving right in?

All right, I'll start looking about more. In fact, there is an old abandoned A1 hardware shop just down the street from my house. And there's old abandoned power plant downtown.

The abandoned power plant sounds much more interesting. Most of the time breaking into an old store is asking for trouble, and its rarely worth it, since retail space is usually never left unused for long periods of time.

Fully agree just be careful on your first time and always keep in mind to be prepared before you go.

SiM, unlike will is suggesting, skip the "breaking" part of the entering unless you're busting into your own place because you left the keys inside. It's easier to get out of a misdemeanor and/or fine than a felony charge.

I think I'll do some reading about the power plant, and see if it is easy to get in. Apparently, it is, as I have seen an album on Flickr of it.

Crawl before you walk.

Start off with small things, houses and small stores...things like that.

Fisrt off, they are usually less secure, and you can learn about safety there with much less danger of injury. Also, if you see the small stuff like houses and whatnot before you go to the steel mills and power plants, you will enjoy them more. After you do the big stuff, houses loose their appeal real quick.

Exploring is like tattoos... They stopped being cool in 2005

Why would being less secure be good?

No wait, that was dumb...

I'll start small, with that little store (been abandoned for a really long time, since forever practically) and then work on up. One of these days I'll check out that power plant.

Exploring in more rural areas is better for starting out. Cops (and everyone else) are much friendlier in small towns, and there are less of them.

Rural area = low population = less eyes watching you

And even if you don't like the idea of exploring with permission, you might want to start out with that if possible, so you can get a feel for natural dangers and such without having to worry about getting caught.

Rural Exploration ftw!

Why would you take advice from people on the internet who don't even know you? Start with things in your environment that you find interesting or would like to know more about and work from there.

google earth & local live are good secondary research tools, along with anything from newspapers about closings/job losses etc. etc.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

Google Earth is a good resource, especially if you like drains. For topsides it is usually too out of date to find places. A good idea is to ask local kids, they always know a place or two. Just be patient and keep your eyes open, riding the train i find is an easy way to spot abandoned industrial buildings. Also check your local planing office for proposed redevelopments, freedom of information acts are a goldmine for the urbex minded person

Honestly, why are you here? What do you think you're doing? How can you be interested in a dangerous hobby simply because you found a website about it on the internet?

If you haven't spent your life looking for things that other people don't see, what in the hell are you doing here?

mutantMandias may cause dizziness, sexual nightmares, and sleep crime. ++++ mutantMandias has to return some videotapes ++++ Do not taunt mutantMandias
