| | How to deal with people. < on 11/6/2007 11:21 PM >
| | | I've asked about cameras, respirators, and animals; now for people. What would you do if you came across someone while exploring if that person was a)possibly the owner b)police/security c)homeless person d)some hooligan (tagger, trouble maker, etc) What if they saw you? What if they approached you and seemed to be very angry or violent?

| | | in case of a)explain I'm a photographer and ask about the history of the place. b)if i have been seen, explain I'm a photographer and ask about the history of the place. if i have not been seen, i would lay low and scope it out c)find out if they are singing or stabbing d)take pics off them and go to police (unless they are really good tagger and we were in the gallery II)

| | | a) be very nice, play the photographer card, ask nicely if you can photograph the place. stress that you're not going to damage or vandalize anything. show them some photos of other places if possible, to back up the story that you're a photographer interested in the beauty of the decaying building/structure. b) same as A, but be more nice and friendly. sometimes acting aloof helps. if they ask you to leave, leave and apologize (going back is your choice). if you're inside the building, say you found a hole and was curious and wanted to photograph the inside. reeally stress you didnt do any harm to the place. c) be nice, give them some smokes or a few bucks or a sandwich. maybe ask them about the place. if they're mean, get outta there. d) yell "POLICE!/SECURITY! STOP WHERE YOU ARE!" and watch em run. [last edit 11/7/2007 8:00 AM by bluegrassishh - edited 1 times]

| | | My only encounter so far was mall security at a hotel owned by the mall. We just walked down and met him coming in, assured him we would not be back, and left. But afterwards we did contemplate doing alot of other things to the poor guy, all in good joking form though. [last edit 11/7/2007 5:43 PM by emck00 - edited 1 times]

| | | My solution: don't let them see you.
For owners, apologize and let them know I'm not there to harm anything and won't sue them if I get hurt. Ask to continue. For authority figures, stress the fact that I am NOT black. Or armed. For homeless dudes, chill with them. They have the best stories. For taggers/vandals, scare the fuck out of them. It's hilarious.

I usually run at them and chase them around a bit then I'll growl and assert my dominance by breaking stuff and throwing things at them

| | | Claiming to be doing research for an architecture class is often rather credible. It even might explain a bit of the equipment you have with you.

That would work, I should use it sometime if I need to, mind you I've not been seen yet (knock on wood) so I hope to keep that up.

| | | usually when i suspect a person is in the same building as me i anounce my presence with authority and ask who they are and what THEY are doing there. as most people who do not do just that to me don't belong there and will leave quite hastily. but when i do run into an owner etc i explain my interest and that i had wandered in to take some photos and usually ask for more information.
Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested. |
