I try and avoid confrontation, but when that is impossible I have to threaten my way out (knives are great if someone gives you hell), although I've only done that once. The gun laws in Canada suck, so I can't carry a Glock 17 or 21 around in my bag to talk people out of stupid ideas.

The best thing to do is travel in groups so people don't get any ideas; I travel with my boyfriend and two of his friends when we go and we haven't had any trouble yet.

I've asked about cameras, respirators, and animals; now for people.

What would you do if you came across someone while exploring if that person was
a)possibly the owner
b)police/security
c)homeless person
d)some hooligan (tagger, trouble maker, etc)

What if they saw you? What if they approached you and seemed to be very angry or violent?

Owner and non-sworn officers;
Run if possible. Your legal obligation is to vacate promise at once. They have no right to detain you.

Police. Stop and cooperate. If you run, eluding police is far more serious than simple trespass.

transient: ignore and go on with your exploration. if they start trouble or pose a threat (i.e. throwing something, threatening to throw, or charging at you) mace him and leave.

trouble makers/thugs/gang: leave, avoid agitating them. if they're armed and you piss 'em off, you're rather screwed.

Even in the states, if you're found with a gun in possession while you're doing something you shouldn't be doing (including trespassing) you bring yourself upon possible complications, like armed burglary, weapons violation etc.

Yeah, but in Canada you can't have one anywhere but at home or the range. I could have used it when I got mugged a few years back, but even just pulling it out and telling them their horoscope would have got me in trouble for possessing a restricted weapon (and brandishing the damned thing in my own defence).

When dealing with hoods, your safest bet is to climb a tree or pole, as it it a well-known fact that common hoods can't climb. Hooligans, on the other hand, are quite adept at climbing and so you should simply run (preferably downhill). When dealing with thugs don't even try to escape, they will always chase you down. However, they are only interested in live prey, so you should immediately fall into the fetal position and play dead. Unless the thugs are particularly hungry, in which case you'll be torn to shreds if you play dead.

I would kill you for a snack right now. I mean, seriously. I would end you for a cookie.

The best way I have found to deal with hoods is to bring a cat. Its a universal fact they are afraid of cats. The furrier the better.

40+ year olds with Myspace pages are not cool, they are pediphiles on the prowl. Buyer beware.

Holy water, garlic and crucifix - works on hoods, hookers and vampires. And hooligans can't cross the water, so while running, run over nearest bridge. Thugs won't eat you, if you piss on ground and roll on it before faking dead - they don't like smell of urine.

Living in Poland is like searching for a key in a pool full of used syringes.

Ive used the "im in an art class and Im taking photos of the area for a project" line to success.

Also, claiming to be following my "lost cat" has worked well too.

Old Lady: Hey! What are you doing? This area is protected by the police?

Me: Is that so?

Old Lady: Yes! There was a strange animal in there attacking people! That's why they closed it off! It's dangerous!

Me: I see. I guess I'll just be leaving then.

Just stay calm and earnest. You're taking photos for an art class, lost your frisbee, whatever. You're not a thief or vandal.

When confronted by security, I'm courteous and polite, and ask who I should talk to for official access to the site. I always follow this up, but sadly, I'm yet to be given such permission, and it's invariably because the owners are wary of liability should I injure myself while there, even if we're just talking about an empty house in good condition.

Of course, once you've asked permission and been declined, you lose all plausible deniability for any future visits

Asking is a double edged sword. Still it can get you into places that would otherwise be impossible, and you can learn more about the history of the site like that most times as well. More than once I've been given free rein to shoot as I please, and that, is as good as it gets!
