| | | I came across either a hobo that was scared and was pretending to sleep, or was dead... not sure which, just knew I wanted to leave, cause I didnt notice he was there until I was literally face to face with him...

| | | give them a pack of smokes and they'll play nice. although do beware of hobos suffering from narcotic withdrawl, unless you happen to keep hard drugs with you when exploring, you know, in case of emergency.

| | | I've woken up someone before when exploring. We apologized to him. He said that it was okay, he needed to get ready for church anyway. Then, he told us to be careful on the catwalks because he had a friend fall through. We gave him some cash and he went about his business and we went about ours. It was the most terrifying experience of my life.

| | | Me and my friends used to encounter bums all the time buying liquor underage at various stores in Newark. They're all over the place... And when we couldn't find a store that would sell to us, (usually after one got busted) they were more than happy to buy the alcohol for us, provided of course we tipped them a few bucks. I've witnessed many hobo fights... and even have two regular neighborhood bums, heywood the toothless, and california steve. California steve is a wiley one, and can be seen on warm summer days screaming and shaking his fist at traffic... I've had many encounters with steve, from him regaling me with his 95% gibberish talking stories of Nam', to offering him bottles of liquor I couldn't finish while walking home after parties. One morning I even found him under a rug in a local park, under a foot of snow. I though it was an injured animal and went to look, pulled off the rug and saw a man. He looked up at me and screamed, which caused me to scream, which in turn caused him to scream again, which then caused me to run away very quickly. California steve is supposedly named such because every winter he reportedly hitchhikes to california, and then back again when spring comes. He also supposedly is very wealthy, and even has a house in town which his mother lives in...He is always well dressed as bums go, always with a new pair of sneakers or plaid jacket, and sometimes even a new hat or socks!! Yep, good ole steve. As reliably crazy as the changing of the leaves in autumn.... Anywho.... that really brought me back... Usually if you give a bum a smoke he'll leave you alone. But what they really love is those little 1$ shot bottles of booze. Gin and vodka are the best, because they're cheapest, it's what bums are most used to.

| | | This question has been beat to death. I will answer anyway. Yes I have come across homeless people many times and not just while UE'ing. Never once did I have a bad experience with them. As with anyone you meet be polite and act accordingly. I would be more apt to be worried about the clean cut guy 2 doors down that keeps to himself and smiles at my kid every time she walks by.

| | | Only once recently in one of Toronto's grain silos. The guy was drunk and half asleep and basically just wanted to know if he was gonna get thrashed. We just moved on. A telltale sign he was there was that he dropped a load of pennies by the access point and was obviously too drunk to realize he forgot his money. shelly: Eww, keep an eye on that guy. | | | I came across homeless people twice. Once in NYC while exploring the Freedom Tunnel. He sprung up from a mattress covered with a blanket. I jumped a mile. I apologized & went on my way. The second was at the Newark Jail. I was with a couple of guys so it wasn't so bad. The homeless guys were actually funny as all hell. Telling us the place is haunted by a dog that comes out @ midnight. Then they proceeded to make scary cat noises to scare us. I wanted to go back & take subs to the homeless guys there but Nuteek & handskills wouldn't let me. ha [last edit 10/5/2007 3:19 PM by GotPaisley! - edited 1 times]

| | | Having walked more then a few miles in the shoes of many of the folk I encounter who have been cast aside by society, or sought refuge in the places I find myself seeking solace, I choose to engage them when I stumble upon them off the beaten trail. I've actually had one couple I encountered show me around a location they had moved into. I had been there years before, and had never even found the door to the basement, let alone seen all the goodies down there, so thank you to those two wonderful people I met that day. I hope you're well. I'm actually amazed nobody has referred the OP to the hobo stab insurance policy that is currently being offered by several leading insurance providers. It's only available in certain areas (Detroit is not currently covered by ANYONE for example) but it's worth looking into.
