St. Elmo

Ghost towns in Colorado come in several flavors. There are large ones like Cripple Creek or Leadville which, although their original industry has dried up, have pretty successfully turned themselves into active tourist locations with thriving restaurants and even casinos. There are smaller towns like Victor, which would like to do the same thing but haven't succeeded yet.

St. Elmo, pictured here, has no real hope of either. It's a bit more genuine in that it's been truly abandoned for about 100 years; there are eight full-time residents. It's still a bit touristy in that there's a well-groomed dirt road leading up to it, ample parking, a general store, and a bed and breakfast. But the neat thing about it is the authenticity and completeness of it. There are dozens of buildings still standing, and they're not ruined hulks - apart from a few buildings that have been rebuilt after fires, most are original, unrestored and remarkably intact. Curtains still hang in most of the windows.

Very nice!

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

St. Elmo is nothing special and most UEers won't appreciate the fact that it's touristy and you can't go into any of the buildings.
The best UE Ghost Town in Colorado is Gilman. You will get arrested if you're in the town but there's lots of people who've hiked in (not from the road of course). It's definately a gold mine of fun and worth the venture.

It's one of those places that's a real ghost town (since no one is legally able to live in the town) and the best thing is that it isn't that old and hasn't been cleaned up or out. Luckily it's to much work to get in there that no one seeking copper fortunes and no hood rats have tagged everything.

well, thanks! now you know my secret identity.

Gilman is pretty damn cool. I haven't been up since last winter, but I'm hoping to change that sometime soon.

Um, there are a LOT of tags and general vandalism in Gilman. And there have been a few people out there scrapping too. The town is a hang out spot for the kids and teens in Vail and probably Red Cliff too.

Subduction leads to orogeny. Duh.

Who in the heck has gotten arrested in Gilman? I've been there 7 million times and have never seen one bit of authority anywhere near the place...

I had a couple of friends get picked up but they were parked up on the road like dumbasses. My little brother knew someone who got picked up in the town but that was because he was spotted. So I thought it was a big no no. BUT NOW, I might have to go up there.
I wasn't aware that it's been scrapped and there's tags (not surprised though). I didn't know that's where kids hang out too - so now I might need to go since it's definately worth it and it seems like others have ventured in plenty of times.

I take everything I ever said about St. Elmo back. We went there the other day and its pretty neat. Very touristy though, there were lots of old folks who most likely were camping near by wandering around - so, needless to say I couldn't secretely wander around or anything. The road was nice there too - unlike Crystal.
