| | | Anyone know a good way to clear a small building of pigeons before entering? Will they all come out if you toss 'em some seed or something? I was trying to get into a 6 unit apartment that is infested with the buggers. All the windows are broken, so I thought a feeding might get their attention. They like to wait till yer close and then scare the bejeezus outta you.

| | | Ummmm why would you care about the sky rats? And if walking up to them scares you and not them, you have a problem. We've crawled through a tunnel full of them and their crap that was too small for me to go through with a hoodie and a jacket. I hear the poop dust isn't good for you, but we're still here. Also they don't have laser breath. They can be dealt with.
I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner! Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite. Strategic Beer Command ruling the desert since 1995 http://www.strategic-beer-command.com |

| | | Perhaps some sort of noise making device. I'm thinking along the lines of something like those gadgets that repel bugs by making the noises of their predators, or the things that keep your kitchen mouse free by quietly making cat sounds. Maybe if you had a recording of a hawk or a cat or something, that'd be good if you left it near the door.
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

I was kinda wondering about that-not so much for me but for my animals at home. Anyone know specifics about what these awful things carry?

What I got was never identified, but came close to putting me in the hospital; I was sick for 2+ weeks. It was systemic and nasty. I was working on a bridge for about 3 months, and there was places were the sky rat shit was inches deep. They're known to carry a fungal disease that causes pneumonia I believe.

| | | Blackhawk: What you may have contracted is called Campylobacteriosis - It is often times found in the feces of infected birds, poultry, cattle, dogs, and cats. The major risk lies in dried pigeon feces, if you disturb it with your foot, you will notice a nice dusting in the air. The Campylobacter bacteria in the feces is then inhaled, almost instantly getting into your lungs and digestional tract. Welcome to infection time. Here is a little info from the Centre for Disease Control - "Campylobacteriosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Campylobacter. Most people who become ill with campylobacteriosis get diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within 2 to 5 days after exposure to the organism. The diarrhea may be bloody and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The illness typically lasts 1 week. Some persons who are infected with Campylobacter don't have any symptoms at all. In persons with compromised immune systems, Campylobacter occasionally spreads to the bloodstream and causes a serious life-threatening infection." "About 15 cases are diagnosed each year for each 100,000 persons in the population."
My prevention tip is to wash your hands thoroughly after any UE, and avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and nose. If you do exhibit any of the symptoms listed above, drink lots of fluids for a week. If it lasts any longer, see your doctor as soon as possible. Remember doctor patient confidentiality. They will not get you in trouble, and I am pretty sure they'll make you feel a heck of a lot better.

Nope, my doctor would have ID that with a stool culture if I had those symptoms. No GI symptoms. I've had Salmonella before, so I have a good idea what of a nasty GI infection is. Not streptococcal bacteria either. Try 101 fever, sore throat, sore everything, very swollen lymph nodes in neck, and extending to the armpit lymph nodes. A much nastier animal than the little bug your talking of. They don't call them the rat's of the sky for nothing.
