| | | That's awesome, thanks for the pics. There's something weird going on there. Look at the shape of the parking lot, that narrow side road part, and the perimiter road? A closer inspection is in order... I hope they don't still have DND signs, (trespassing on DND lands might be considered a *federal offence) it's not like we could do any damage, lol. *and so could buying leaky subs with bad wiring, running on only 3 cylinders!

| | | I have contactd a source who has been in the bunker while it was in operation 2 decades ago. He has confirmed that this is in fact the outline of the bunker. There used to be airshaft's, vents on top as well apparently.

| | | So, the entrance to this bunker was in fact at ground level on the east side of the mound in the middle. I think there is a small divit there where the gound covering the door has settled. They stopped using the bunkers because of the cost of maintenance. obviously then they would not spend money actually removing an entire bunker that was built to withstand a 20 megaton nuclear attack. http://www.cbc.ca/..._bunker220201.html

| | | There is also an equally sized nuclear bunker further up the highway near Nanoose. It used to be a transmitter site.

| | | The sign was interesting, I liked the abstract shadows. The stairs are a bit dodgy, that photo was taken with a telephoto, looking on top of the bunker. It was not necessary to go in. Doesn't look like much, just the way they like it, uh huh.

| | | Well after reading this board for days (all of the Victoria Tunnels posts) I thought I would contribute something of interest. I always wondered what was on the DND property beside Malaspina. I didn't know it actually use to have something on it. As for the mines in Nanaimo there is apparently a large network of mines through the city and under the water to Protection Island and Newcastle Island. Apparently they are filled with water now and probably all sealed off. I know where one of the entrances on Protection Island is but I believe there might be a layer of tarmac over the large metal doors now. I haven't explored Newcastle too much but it use to be a rock quarry so there are round drilled out areas of rock. I heard a story about three boys going into the mines years ago 70's maybe 80's and were lost so they started sealing it off. I'm not sure how accurate it is since I heard it a long time ago. There are also mines around Langford which I came across when I was quite young. There is an entrance in the middle of the woods off the highway not far past Spencer Road (the Shell Station) heading North. I believe this entrance may be sealed as well but I had gone in it (not far) as a kid. There was also the remains of an old logging truck just behind the old folks trailer park there which may or may not have been cleaned up by now. The sad part is land is is so valuable around here that cool abandoned areas are becoming scarce.
