I was in the Alberta "Diefenbunker" located at CFB Penhold in central AB twice. Sadly it was demolished in May/June of '01. Was quite the structure - I had a tour as a youngster in about 83 - too young to really appreciate the opportunity. (Kick myself now for not payin attention more then.) and again in 01 when I was viewing some of the industrial elecric motors and Generator-sets that were being removed. Unfortunatley when I was there the whole complex was being razed to the ground -it was not what I remembered! It was also not safe for closer inspection either.

I did in 1994 attempt to gain access with some of the base maintenance personnel ( I was in the CF at that time.) Unfortunately it was locked up tighter than Fort Knox as it was still an asset of the DND. Shortly afterward Feds declared the structure surplus and tried to dispose of it. They even had a real estate firm/agent trying to sell it to organizations like museums and historical societies or the like. In 1995 it was sold to two local (Red Deer or Calgary) business men for 400+k who did nothing with it for almost 2 years. In 1998 the Feds stepped in and bought it back for 1.25 million - they got wind that an individual who had close ties with outlaw bikers or was one was looking or ready to buy it.

The rest is now history. Good enough?

Tell me what to look for - I will find it.

"anyone know about the "diefenbunker" beside malaspina in nanimo??"

I wish. Found an aerial photo of it a while back, can't find it again. It just looked kind of like a raised field. Apparently it was sealed sometime between 1994 and 2001. Maybe they will open it sometime as a tourist attraction. The one in Ottawa has tours, is four stories deep.

Studying aerial photos or Google Earth should reveal the site.

Here's an aerial of the Campus. What's that odd looking raised forest area just below the lake? Or maybe I'm grasping at straws. Worth doing some scouting and talking to a few old timers...

apparently its all still under gov control, the topside has been stripped, but the underground structures still exist, i have some friends at malaspina that tryed to find away in, apparently there is roumor of a tunnel from under the malaspina campus into the bunker, it was to hold the provincial parlament in case of nuclear war. there must be ventalation shafts or service hatches or something of the sort leading into the bunker. i wonder why the city doesent open it and give tours? also my boss was telling me that when he was a kid he lived in behind the downtown area in nanimo, him and his friends used to sneak into the old mine shafts??? apparently there was a bit of mining where the nanimo down town residential is, halfway between malaspina and the water. he told me that there were airvents and such that were boarded up, and about some kind of tunnel on the bank of a creek. im not from nanimo so i dont know much about the area, cumberland is 15 minutes away and that gives me enough mine shafts to lurk about with. maybe someone from nanimo would want to check it out.

On another note about nanimo, newcastle island, an island in the nanimo harbour. in the early part of last century, newcastle island used to have a mine or two, it was later closed down and became a very popular park/picnic area. and there was a mineshaft dug from nerwcastle island right accross to downtown nanimo, aswell as to protection island, apparently the tunnel still exists. or mine shaft rather.

"apparently there is roumor of a tunnel from under the malaspina campus into the bunker,"

Great info danbar101. If we find out the year the college was built, maybe it's around when the bunker was constructed. I wonder what the school was originally built as? Maybe always for a college, but if built around the cold war/bunker time, there's more chance it could be linked to the bunker.

City Hall should have plans that are accesible to the public. Maybe some clues in the plans. A great project to study. I doubt they did more than just seal the entrances. This way they have the option to open it up and re use. Maybe a metal detector will help find some covered hatches and air vents...

The Diefenbunker on the Nanaimo Army base was demolished years ago. Several friends of mine were in the reserves, and had the chance to go down into it. Said it wasn't that big, two or maybe three stories in all.

On a related note, the Nanaimo Base has now been completely de-building-ized. There were many structures on the base - barracks, officers and junior messes, shops, administrative buildings - not to mention parade grounds and various other buildings scattered around the site - which is very large. As recently as 10 years ago, the Army used the base for training and other army stuff (home of reserves). Military downsizing sounded the death knell for the operation, and everything standing has been demolished, and the site returned to a "natural" state.

I think Malaspina was going to buy/rent space for expansion and parking, but I've heard that the base may be included in First Nations land claims/treaty negotiations.

Malaspina moved to its current location from its original home in the old Nanaimo Hospital in the 1970s. The Diefenbunker was built during the Cold War (1950s). The rest of the base dated to WWII and after, as did some of the buildings that sat on the lower part of the Malaspina Campus. I've never heard of any tunnel connecting any of the buildings at Malaspina to the Base or Diefenbunker. With the Diefenbunker demolished, and the contemporary buildings nearly all gone, I don't know how successful your search will be.....

A couple years ago, Jester and I drove past/around trying to find the bunker. I had a pretty good idea of where to look, and we found- a large mound of dirt. They've either ripped the bunker out (as they did in Penhold, Alberta) or the entrances have been completely caved in.

Interesting comments Reduxzero and Anvil, maybe just the entrances were sealed, although it sounds like it was destroyed. A loss for sure, would have been an awesome tourist attraction, or possible exploration. Still, there's lots to explore on the island.

Would be great to hear more about York Island danbar101, my Googling didn't reveal anything. There's some very cool stuff in the Queen Charolettes, years ago I explored by kayak some areas up there. The great myth? is of Nazi submarine bases in some of the fiords. If interested in wartime stuff in B.C., this book is great: Neil G. Carey, A Guide to the Queen Charolette Islands.

We found some weird stuff, including 1910 era solid rubber tired, open cab logging trucks that ran on plank built roadways. (completely abandoned and overgrown of course, and a sunken grave yard nearby) Not as cool as a sub base, but quite amazing. Pardon my train of thought getting derailed, but the theme is about wartime dwellings, s'all good yeah.

i would think it would cost to much money for the government to take the entire thing out, seems like something they would just cover up and let be.

They can't just cover up an underground structure - environmental laws demand that the site be returned to its "natural" state.

Damn environment, jeez, everywhere I look there it is... lol. Here's an example of adaptive reuse. In uber cool leading edge over populated low on water and electricity but still awesome California of course!

The world famous Butcharts Gardens is a reworked cement quarry, imagine what they could have done with the Bunkers, and I don't mean Archie and Edith, sheesh, flipping lack-of-vision Gooberment.

For details go to Pacific Southwest-Half sunken train ferry.

I was in the Diefenbunker in the late 70's. Unfortunately I did not get the grand tour. We just ate in the dining area.

How was the food? Did you get enough mashed potatoes?

Seriously though, that's cool, imagine a whole underground kitchen and dining area, and all the other rooms, amazing. What a shame if it's really all gone... At least they saved the big one in Ontario.

I am pretty sure that I found the location on Google.

http://www.google....=0.003095,0.007231

To the right of the two lane highway you can see an oval section of pavement. The widened area on the right was the parking area. To the left of it you can see a faint rectangular outline of where the bunker used to be.

When I went in the bunker, the entrance was at ground level, with a mound of dirt looking like a gable roof.

It would have been cool to tour the whole complex.

It's google maps. You need java installed I believe. I took some screenshots of it so you can see it. I believe he was referring to the rectangular looking outline in the grass.
