UER card?
< on 6/8/2006 9:15 AM >

so, I'm thinking that it might be interesting/useful to have a (thin plastic) card in my wallet that says something like "I am a leave-no-trace urban explorer. I seek to explore interesting sites, and occasionally take pictures. I understand and accept the physical risks involved in exploring abandoned buildings, and my purposes are not nefarious. My philosophy is, 'Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.'"

or something like that. I dunno. could be a dumb idea, but I'd sure like to have something like that to hand to the cops if I get busted, to make my story a little more believable.
anyone else think it's a good idea? anyone know a good way to print out a thin card like this?

hmmm. i think i'd rather have a card that's actually made of plastic. i wouldn't mind spending a few $ on it for the quality... but I kinda dislike laminated cards.

I'm thinking of a generic looking access pass in a variety of colours and designs. That'd be handy.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but how will that help you when you're arrested? If that were the case, I'd be quick to pull out my "I-drive-perfectly-sober-all-the-time-and-follow-all-other-rules-of-the-road" card the next time a cop catches me driving drunk.

Not that I drive drunk, but you see my point.

This seems to get brought up every three months or so.

ever been handled? (dealt with by the police)

9 out of 10 cops will just laugh at your "UER leave no trace" card then hand it back to you the 10th cop (least in Texas) would take it away from you

let us know how it works next time you get caught

Isn't this like rentacops who think flashing their security guard licence will get them out of a traffic ticket?

I think you'd have a better chance of getting away while the cop is on the floor rolling about in a fit of uncontrolled laughter than you would on the card's own merits.

Unless of course the cop happens to be a member of uer.ca

But in such a case there is also a chance you had a big fight with him once over an ethical issue and then he's now gonna burn your twice as bad then he would have if you were just a random punk.

err, the idea is that cops hate mischief makers, and might be quite disinclined to believe that I'm "just there to take pictures" unless I show a card that at least demonstrates that i've put some thought into my exploration.
Plus, i've seen some people talking about how hard it is to describe their hobby to laymen in standard conversation.

Though it is novel to have cards like this. It's more a keepsake than a get-out-of-jail-free card.

It's cute. I would keep one in my UE kit, but I wouldn't flash it to a cop or any authority for that matter.

If we have a membership card, do we have to pay yearly dues? And shouldn't I get a free flashlight with it, damnit!?

You could just show your camera and your pictures instead of a silly card.

Of course, having a card with UER printed on it in big letters wouldn't attract the more cops to this site, not at all.

the card i use is simply like a press pass. you can get press passes online for very cheap. it doesn't mention uer or any site. it simply states i am a photographer with photographer's rights. it doesn't help if i am caught trespassing of course.
the purpose is to show that i treat my exploration and photography as professionally as possible. no, i don't expect it to get me out of jail free. i don't ever plan on showing it to the police if i am caught. what it does is prevent getting caught by talking to the right people beforehand to get in to a building.
and i never rely on it 100 percent. it's another prop. just like having a phone in an active site. or carrying a camera, not just to take photos, but to show that i am there to take photos. i've even carried my camera when i knew the batteries were dead, just so i'd have an excuse.
the card is just another layer of protection. some people laugh at it, some think it is worth having. personally, i like to think that i would never have to use it or any prop and just rely on my sneaking skills.

oh i absolutely wouldn't recommend advertising uer.ca on the card...
and I think I would show it to a cop (unless they seem like total dicks, as described later). i haven't been "handled" while ueing, but I've had to deal with cops over a dozen times. I always come out better if I'm straight with them and make their job easier.
I think I would definitely show a card like this to a cop. Anything to help my explanation of my activities.
cop: "hey! what are you doing around here? tagging?"
UEer: "no, I'm just looking around."
cop: "yeah, right, and breaking a few windows while you're at it?"
UEer: "no, I really don't believe in vandalization, I just want to wander around in interesting areas."
cop: "you expect me to believe that?"
UEer: "well, I've got this card here that describes my intentions, if you'd like to read it."
cop: "well, it's dangerous around here."
UEer: "I know, and I accept the responsibility, but if you'd like to be kind and not cite me, i'd appreciate it."
cop: "that's nice. go home. I don't want any more trouble from you."

Granted, that's a fantasy scenario, but i can imagine it playing out that way with some of the cops i've had to deal with.
of course, it could go the other way too:
"oh, so you do this a lot, do you? sounds like premeditated b&e to me. you have the right to remain silent..."

I guess it would be a judgement call to show or not to show...
