Don't piss off the engineers, respect the their right away. Don't run on tracks. Learn to read the signal lights, and which way the trains NORMALLY travel. Get the bullsheet to see when they are running. If your cool about it you won't get hassled taking pics of trains, in fact many times the engineers will wave. Wave, and smile...keep a respectful distance.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

After taking pictures at active railyards I have learned that as long as you stay off the tracks the rail police will usually be cool with it. I'm not sure if the stance about pictures changes by company, but from what I have experienced BNSF and Union Pacific don't mind photographers. I believe they are more secure at intermodal yards though, but regular yards are pretty lenient.

Yes, and I'd like to add it's better not to be seen at all. Rail cops can be really nice and real dicks.

there's a thread over on the railroad.net forums about some people outside of Toronto on top of a car taking pics of a train as it went by. The engineer was pretty pissed off, and several others broke in with a decidedly anti-friendly barrage of bitching over railfans.

Probably disgruntled employees...I hear the majority of the "railfan" community is in their 50's, or was that the model rr one? Either way old people can be bitchy when disgruntled No offense to you older gents out there

don't walk on or near the tracks, engineers just don't like that, it gets them ansy. Be aware of any train activity going on near you in order not to be "surprised" if one happens to sneak up on you.

And, as always, watch for the law.

Keep it fuzzy.

Just use the excuse.. I'm a Model Railroader & want some ref. material.

I used a similar excuse when I was poking around an old airfield that the city now uses for storage..

Cops might ask you what your doing, but normally don't hassle you for taking pics. If your collecting reference material the easiest way is to take a pic. Cops appreciate honest answers, and don't like people playing on the tracks. A a lie is a poor way to start an encounter with a cop, especially if you don't have to.

RR tracks can be dangerous even when there's no trains. If you trip you can easily fracture your skull, or bust ribs. I have a "dent" in my rib cage from a fall like that. Trains appear to be moving slower than they are to the inexperienced observer. An optical illusion due to their massive size; don't laugh many have learned this lesson the last few seconds of there lives. Most people can not correctly judge a train's closing time from a 1/4 mile away. At 70+ MPH it's fast. If the engineer is blowing the hell out of his air horn you have pissed him off. He may radio it in too.

A cop that stop me a year ago on the tracks let me continue with my pic taking. I was talking with him a bit and learn he had been one of the poor bastards that had to pick up body parts from two different rail kills. A half mile trail of human body parts makes an impression on you as you put the pieces in a bucket. They don't want people getting killed.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

tell me about it... i have to cross a couple of sets of rails at the mill I work at during my rounds... I am constantly tripping over these stupid things!

one of my favorite places to watch the freighters go by- Port Henry train station, Port Henry NY. This pic was taken by someone else, but I lost the name/address. I didn't take this:

Funny you should say that. I was going back to work at a light jog across the tracks. My one foot didn't clear the first rail, and i tripped. Fell hard and fast, was spun about 90 degrees as I fell. I was quick enough to put my arm out above my head, and to the side; to attempt to arrest my fall. I did, but my side and ribs slammed against the SECOND rail. The old 1,2 punch; very effective. I lay there writhing in agony trying to catch my wind, and not passout. I was going into shock, unable to move, right dead center on a very active RR track! Dying there did cross my mind. I was lucky after about 30 to 180 seconds I was able to craw/limp away. If I hadn't got my arm out to help break the fall I be dead.

Nice train pic.

Alright, I don't if this is true for all places but, watch out for the homeless! I'm not trying to make a joke here either, I'm actually serious. There are some pretty sweet spots in North Bay for train exploration and picture taking but it seems that the city's less fortunate are drawn to the train yard and they can get pretty irate and even dangerous when outsiders go poking around.
If you know that the railway station/train yard where you plan to go is a likely place for drifters or homeless; take a friend along and go during daylight hours. I'm not saying that anything bad will come of your exploring the site but there have been instances where people have been beaten up or robbed.

I've done it twice. Once with a friend of mine who worked the railways and once on a whim. caught a freight heading past a station near to my home years ago. I knew it could not go too far, and it had to cross that crossing very slowly because there was a tram line over it. Had to slow down to avoid damaging the tracks.

I have not done this for years, and am in no hurry to do it again.

I second that sentiment about being in no hurry to train hop again! I tried it once, and don't regret it, or recommend it. Like playing with a lion in heat. Getting on is fairly easy, it's getting off if it's moving that's the kicker. You know those cars can sway quit a bit from left to right if your on the ladder near the top of the car.

Yes, unfortunately unless you have access to all the information for that line, that day, anything goes. Even RR workers constantly are looking when walking active tracks. However commuter lines almost always run the same direction at peak times, freight lines generally do to, but it depends on the tracks for that area. maintenance vehicles generally move slower, but can show up quit unexpectedly. Signal lights are a farly accurate track status indicator.
