some photos to introduce myself: SAVANNAH & ATLANTA

Hey guys, girls. I'm Smithee; named so for the infamous 'Alan Smithee', who, as many of you know, directed a whole slew of crappy movies. I'm a film student, and find beauty in abandoned, dilapidated places; I like to photograph them with my camera wizardry. I guess you could say I'm a photographer who's main subject is the decay left from a disposable society. That's what brings me here.

and boy do I love semicolons :)

Let me also say that I admire and respect the community you guys have here. I've been exploring for the larger portion of my short life, but I never knew there was actually an organized, respectable community behind it. Glad to meet you all.

So, without further ado, here are some samples of my finds.

I found this wonderful door in downtown Savannah on the inside of building which only had its walls remaining. I had to jump a fence right next to the street, probobly looking a tad conspicuous with the giant medium format camera I was lugging, but the picture more than makes up for the trouble I went through. On the inside of the enclosed structure was a miniature forest, untrampled, unused by junkies and homeless people, untagged. It was beautiful.

This is a shot from the outside of the same structure. It was all boarded up and chained together and from the looks of it, used to be an old automobile repair shop. There are a ton of old buildings from around the middle of the century (ca. 1950-1960) that are just laying around in Savannah, waiting to be explored. Not to mention the hundreds of historical buildings.

My next specimen was a highly tempting abandoned house that I found while pedaling my way through the streets of Savannah. The neighborhood that this building was in was almost completely abandoned, and most houses had their doors wide open, tempting me to investigate. This is a shot from the second floor, looking into what appeared to be a bathroom at one point (notice, shower faucet). Directly to the left of this rubble were two mysteriously placed pool tables.

This is a shot from the same building, this time from the lower level, looking in through a hole in the wall from outside. Notice the seven. :) This scene was miraculous, I think, because of the light streaming in from some random hole in the ceiling, illuminating an otherwise dark area.

That's it for Savannah I'm afraid. At least for now. Have any of you guys ever gone roofing? Here are some shots from atop a local Publix in Atlanta. It's not really anything abandoned, but it's urban exploration all the same, I'd say.

Atop the greenhouse lookin' thing; part of the main complex.

We had to crawl around on painful rocks to keep from being seen. Ouch.

A beautiful wide angle shot of the sky. mm mm.

Well folks, that's it for me on this post. I sure hope you enjoyed my initiation into UER, and be sure to be on the lookout for more contributions from me in the future. Actually, I'm going exploring tomorrow down at a couple of abandoned shopping centers... I'll let you guys know what I find!

later

I lived in Savannah several years ago and was always fascinated with all of the buildings but had not really started 'sploring at that time. I love that city. Enjoy St. Patrick's Day!

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

Yeah be prepared to work hard for 4 years then graduate and get a job. I know, it is a terrible thing. Just because SCAD isn't for you doesn't mean it isn't for every one. Some us don't want to be starving arists.

Or....you could work hard for 4 years in an institution with dignity and proper accreditation so that your degree will count outside signing up to be the next applebee's production designer. I don't know what you're in andrea, scad might be good for you. However their film and television production program bites hard. Not only that but if you want to continue in your graduate studies being in a school that's not a NASAD school hurts your choices.

In any case, welcome. Don't mind me, i'm always grumpy, especailly when SCAD gets brought up. i'll be more than happy to explore with you if you come to town, atlanta has many, many locations to be had.

don't worry about it man. I think it's terrible for you guys who are being swallowed up, I really didn't want to see that happen but there was nothing I could do to stop it. Sure, it makes me resent them to a certain extent, but I've had my heart set on going there for years.

by the way, I'm actually living in atlanta right now.

Oh what a small world, Smithee and I grew up in the same neighborhood and now he randomly shows up on UER. And goes to my college. Hm.

Malign, get over it, SCAD's film program isn't as bad as you make it out to be. I understand being pissed that they are taking over your school but ACA isn't the amazing institution you make it seem either. Besides, most of Savannah's best UE spots are compliments on SCAD and their disregard for some of their possessions.

ACA's video department actually is chaired by a world renown video artist, so yeah it is that good. Its completely different philosophies. Plain and simple, SCAD does not compare except in their photography, sound and applied areas. Just like ACA's applied arts don't compare to SCAD's , but have beyond amazing sculpture, painting, printmaking and video facilities.

As for "get over it" i think that's a bit of a stretch since "getting over it" means having to spend tons of money and time to find, move to and attend a new school in a new city if i don't want scad's deal. I moved to atlanta to be a part of Sara Hornbacher's video program specifically because it was a program that works directly with the medium and not some cheap ass wanna be film program. My life and MANY others are seriously hampered because of this deal. "Get over it". ha.

But whatever. believe what you want to believe. SCAD in its inception was a fucked situation. See: Anneewakee

In any case besides our disagreement on institutions neither you or andrea ave come out to atlanta to meet with us yet. I promise it'll be a blast
