| | | | Dogs? < on 10/23/2005 10:33 PM >
| | | Lopix and I did some recon on a site today and noticed it had about 5 or 6 very large signs (i.e. about 3'square) warning of guard dogs inside. The building, however, had some not insignificant holes in it and the fence.. Anyone have any (serious) tips for testing for canine presence in a fairly large old industrial site? Has anyone ever encountered dogs or are they typically just scare tactics?

I ran into a pack of wild dogs yesterday while at a coal processing plant in West Virginia. Definately NOT a place you want to run into them either.

| | | I've only encountered dogs a couple times. Once they were restrained, another time they saw us but weren't close enough to catch us, and another time I was warned in advance. One thing to look for is the obvious; feces. Look around for ropes and chains tied around trees or poles, and dirt pits which clearly show the rope limit. Sometimes you can even see doghouses and food bowls, depending on how much time they spend roaming the property. We try to bring Dutch (my friend's German Shepherd) exploring with us. The one time we were warned in advance was because he was with us. He started acting funny and trying to follow a smell.. we followed him a little ways and it was clear he was onto another dog's scent. Reason enough to get the hell out. I know for a fact several places put up signs like that as a scare tactic, but the only way to know for sure is to find out. Just keep your eyes, nose, and ears open. And as mentioned above, it helps to have the trusted and keen senses of another dog handy. [last edit 10/23/2005 10:58 PM by LiquidCougar - edited 2 times]

| | | I've never ran into any dogs but I've seen signs around a property warning of an "Attack Aardvark On Patrol". This was not a joke I don't think. I asked about it and the guy told me they we just like dogs. Not sure if this helps or is even relevent but you gotta watch out for those imported animals too. lol.

| | | Apparently a kid got his leg mauled by a pit bull that belonged to a vagrant inside an abandoned industrial space in Olneyville/Providence that was recently demolished. The story stuck with me for two reasons: #1 The kid got mauled, and #2 apparently the vagrant was a distant relative of the building's owners, so they avoided any potential legal action, by announcing that he was the building's caretaker. I've seen two other spots in the state that claimed to have guard dogs, but as far as I could tell didn't. I think what you really need to watch out for is not places with caution signs and dogs, but places with no signs and dogs.

| | | Examine the fence and notice if it is secure. If not, the dog sign is probably phoney since the liability of the owner having dogs that could get out and hurt someone is great. If the site is abandoned, someone needs to arrive to feed the dogs and care for them - look for signs of recent entry (tire tracks on a dirt road after you smoothed it over the night before) or place dirt/ grease or even ultravoilet dye on the padlock / fence gate and check to see if anyone has entered and touched the lock. Toss a cat over the fence (hahahah) or a small dog and wait and watch. but make sure to invest in a $15.00 - $20 ultrasonic dog repeller and a $10 can of pepper spray. the dog repellers basically work (I have used them) and so does the pepper spray. also, make sure to have a quick method of scaling the fence to get back to safety and out of the protected area. if the dog is too close, back away . . . don't run dogs have a natural instinct to pursue and chew. a powerful flashlight can also help blind a dog while you are backing away. Good luck . . . dog meat. HAMMER

| | | In a place where police dogs are occasionally trained: "Wow, we've never got into this part before" "yeah, but doesn't it strike you a bit wierd, these walls have been painted recently, and the windows have been fixed up. "You reckon they train the dogs in here?" "Maybe, I know they do it in the admin block up front, maybe they do it in this bit too" "Why the hell would they leave all the doors open though, they're not training dogs today, and the admin block's locked up" Dogs outside: "WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF" "Oh shit, fucking leg it" Luckily we didn't meet the dogs on our rather rapid exit.

| | | Slightly off-topic, but possibly useful. Most animals, including dogs, have at least some vision in the Ultraviolet range. That is to say that if you wash your UE clothes with Tide or another commercial detergent, you can be in almost total darkness and still stand out like a beacon to a dog. There are commercial products like Sportwash and UV Killer that will cure this problem, but the simplest answer is simply Woolite. Wash your gear twice in Woolite, and the UV brighteners in modern detergents will be removed, giving you a small extra measure of security.

That's the thing. If we could see more than one way for us to get in, the same ways existed for dogs to get out. I mean, big holes in walls and gates that you could step through. So if they were inside, they would have nothing stopping them from leaving, except training.

Again, it is a somewhat active site, being reno'ed, so there is fairly constant activity during the week. Thus, they would have to remove the dogs when the workers were there, right? And it is a hodgepodge place, more like a bunch of buildings together, additions or whatnot to the original structure. The way we saw in was in a part that was not signed, though an area with people in at the time was. Logic says the signs are BS, but self-preservation wants to be sure...

| | | Logic says if they had the usual "Beware of dogs" sign, it might be bullshit... however, these weren't your typical signs.. these were about 6'sq. and there were about 5 of them. I'm more inclined to believe these ones..
