| | | a 6 will NOT bump a 5. It just won't line up to jump the right pins at the right times.

This isn't exactly true - it's not dependent on how many cuts you have in the key, but rather their spacing. If you're careful you can bump a 5 pin lock with a key with 6 cuts - you just have to have more control over your bumping, and your tension-turning timing. The spacing of your bumpkey is, well, key. ~G

| | | just wondering if anyone has attempted to "bump" a lock with spool pins? i'm assuming spool pins defeat this method of attack, or at least make it much more difficult, as it does with manual picking.

| | Bump Keys <Reply # 66 on 11/27/2006 11:04 PM >
| | | Bump keys are not well known to the general public, but have been very valuable for me in various situations. The basic idea is that you can make a key a certain way, pull it out one notch and hit it with a blunt object and it lets you get through any lock. I have a full set of bump keys (12 Keys) and it works so well it is scary. In reality, locks are obsolete unless it is a 'Bump Key Proof Lock'. I have never seen one of those locks used in practice yet. As part of my tools I bring along when I go UE, the bump keys are one of my most important. It is a great thing to have, who knows when a locked door will get closed behind you. Here is a picture of a few bump keys:
Here is a great video on the logic of bump keys, as well as how to make one and use it as well: http://video.googl...177213949300140850 Now the trick to is find all of the most common keys and make bump keys out of them. I was intending on doing this, but then I discovered that others on ebay will sell you the keys for a decent price: http://search.ebay...0&satitle=bump+key The next best thing is to ask that buddy of your's that has access to a key grinder to make level 999 keys for you. I do not recommend going to the store and asking for it to be made, if the locksmith knows anything about his trade, he will know what you are trying to do. Sometimes the coolest things are behind locked doors. I realize this is entering a gray area, but at least you will not be vandalizing to get where you want to go or get away from. Good luck! edit: embedded video did not work [last edit 11/27/2006 11:05 PM by tkdan235 - edited 1 times]

| | | All I can say is that this is great and I can't wait to either make my own set or buy them online. These look great for entering places without causing any damage and you can probably hide one or two on your normal key chain without a cop noticing that they are there. The first place I am going to use them on will definitely be my friend's house who bet I couldn't get in there.

You may not want to do that. You could damage his lock.

that's the thing, bump keys do not damage the lock at all, unlike many other lock picking techniques

| | | I have made one that did not damage the lock, but instead got stuck in the lock. Pliers would not get the damn thing out! That is why I don't like making them, but just buying perfectly grinded keys on ebay. This way you can be confident you wont get busted with a key stuck in the lock!

His mistake for saying I could never do it. I like proving my friends wrong and usually when I say I am going to do something, I do eventually do it.

Haha German is the main one but I don't think its the only part of me that makes me want to prove people wrong. The Irish, Scottish, English and Welsh for the most part according to history seem like they are stubborn as well.

| | | Unless I'm under the wrong impression. I hear it's out of the question to use a crowbar in entry to an abandoned any where! But, some how the practice is encouraged to bump a lock. Not arguing the use of such methods, I just don't understand the idiosyncrosies of both methods and their double standards!? My suggestion to assist in your entry to such a device as a spool pin is bring a can of pressurized butane, that stuff if not freezes on contact, will make what ever it is extremely cold. Cold as a reaction cuases things to go hard, hard makes things brittle! You can pretty much use just butane and a screwdriver to force entry but a combo of butane and a bump key would create a more definitive entry!

the whole idea is a crowbar or smashing things open would be rather destructive.. and while picking a lock does damage it, the damage is normally very minimal to the point most people won't ever notice it..

| | | Bump keys can very easily damage a lock if you bump that lock too much - the same way that a pick gun, or even manual scrubbing with too much force can. As in any lock picking situation, thinks can happen like master pins falling out into the keyway, getting the plug stuck 180[deg] from shear etc. Watch what you do. Your home-made bump keys get stuck because there is an angle that is too sharp for the pins to ride on. You can make a key of death the same way - make it so there is a 30[deg] leading angle but the trailing angle is 90[deg]. The pin will get locked into the cut and won't release, no matter how hard you try pulling.
