| | | How to make bumpkeys and open 75-80% of all locks < on 10/5/2005 5:58 PM >
| | | I want to share this video with you, it is shot at Whatthehack last august. It explains what bumpkeys are and how to make them. Bumpkeys are keys that are cut very deep and the shoulder and top of the keys are shortened. With this key and a "bumper" it is possible to open almost any lock of that kind. Get keys of the most popular locks (10-15) and 75-80% of all locks will open in a few seconds. In this video (shot by Toool) you learn what basic lockpicking is, and you learn how to make bumpkeys (live done on an American lock) the language spoken is English. The movie is quite big (461 mb!) and lasts 97 minutes. The bumpkey making part is around the hour. I hope you enjoy this one, and realize not much locks are safe. http://connectmedi...ol/whatthebump.wmv (right click save ass) If you want to see a short version of what it is all about check this: http://www.toool.nl/bumpkey-alert.wmv [last edit 10/5/2005 6:07 PM by bsidez - edited 3 times]

This made me laugh - I thought I was on some sleezy porn site for a second! Bump keys are a good idea - they work on the same principal as a pick gun, but with more precision. A pick gun has the problem of needle alignment, lock orientation and snap tension because it is designed to work in [almost] all locks and keyways. With bump keys, you can make, in a sense, a sort of "pick gun" for just that keyway out of a keyblank, as bsidez said, cut really deeply. To make these cuts you need to have either a key code cutter, a key duplicator with depth keys or a steady hand with a file / dremel tool or similar precision grinder. The code cutter is best, but be prepared to spend upwards of $1200 on a code cutting machine. I haven't personally tried bump keys, but it is on my list of things to putz around with. The disadvantage to them being that you have to pound on the lock a little, which can damage the plug and create a lot of noise - so although it may be more effective then the pick gun, it's as loud or louder. Give it a try and see what you think of this technique. E-bay is a great place to find keyblanks. ~Grit.

| | | I wonder if carrying a set of bump keys would be considered "breaking and entering tools" and lead to possible charges if you're caught trespassing with them on your person. [last edit 10/5/2005 7:45 PM by Chainsaw - edited 1 times]

you don't need expensive tools, just a grip and a square v-shaped file, look at 52:00 minutes, it shows exactly how to make bump keys with tools for less then 30 dollars in matter of minutes [last edit 10/5/2005 7:54 PM by bsidez - edited 1 times]

| | | Bump keys could be carried on a key ring like normal keys and cops probably wouldn't recognize the deep cuts to be anything out of the ordinary. You can file keys - the best tool for doing so is called a "pippen file" that has a tear-drop profile. This type of file is used extensively in the locksmith art of impressioning. The V-shaped files tend to make cuts that are too angular and don't ride as smoothly, but will do in a pinch. ~Grit.

| | | Is there anyone here on the boards that has access to a keycutting machine? It would be nice to have someone known and trusted to do it for those who desired. I know that I would greatly appreciate such a service.

I have a couple of key machines, but they're at my house. I could possibly in the coming months whip up something for you though. What brand/blank do you need? I just recently found a good source for blanks. ~Grit.

| | | Watched the movie today, and played around with a key for a Master-Padlock. Now, I played around with lock-picking a couple of years ago, managed to get a few open, but lost interest. I opened a masterlock in 10 minutes today, just had to find the right "feel" for it. This works.

| | | grit1, Where would someone be able to purchase a pippen file? I looked all over online out of curiosity, and I found almost no information on them. All I found out was that there are different number pippen files, most likely representing different sizes. However, I didn't find any for sale, and all of my searches in hardware stores turned up nothing. Is there another, more technical name for the pippen file? Or is it just rare for some reason?

| | | I've not come by them easily outside of the locksmithing circle, but large tool/hardware companies like Grainger and MSC industrial supply tend to carry them. www.lockpicks.com has one specifically for impressioning in their impressioning section, but it's not cheap. I suppose they could be referred to as a "tear-drop" shaped file in addition to it's actual technical term. Good luck! ~Grit1

| | | I just made a masterlock bump, mcguyver-style with a triangular diamond-sharpener and a wood file...it actually works pretty well. I've tested it on several different masterlocks (different keyed ones, not just different ones), and some it works too well..just have to give a little push with your fingers, don't even have to hit it.
It's scary how easy it is...

I shaved too much off with the first key, so I'm kinda wary of it now. I think it might work if I take a little more off one of the pin contact points, I thought they pins were supposed to impression the key so that it will work, but oh well. Maybe I just have the technique wrong.

| | | You gotta twist it as you hit it. If you're doing that and it still doesnt work, hit it with something hard against a lock you don't mind damaging a little, it gets the pins to set into the contact points easier. The 2nd key looks fine (actually the first one looks fine as well...), it took me 10-11 hits on the first attempt to actually get it to open. As you use it more, it opens in less and less (just spend 15 minutes using it to get it to open really fast).

| | | As you bump a single lock more and more it wears out, and gets easier to bump. The technique is all in the tension, like most lock-picking "arts". You need to hit the tension at exactly the right time to get the best effect - and it takes practice. This and having the right "hammer" helps - do a lot of experimentation and practicing before trying bumping in the field. ~Grit.

| | | I am self taught at lockpicking and slowly getting better but I am learning on my own so I don't know much about the exacts and stuff I just know the basic "how to do it".. What are the major cuts (lock companies) to get for bumpkeys? I am sure master and Schlage are up there.. But what are the other ones you would recommend getting? and if I went to a hardware store and had them make me a bumpkey would they know all the settings that they 'should' set the key to for that company? or would I need to bring a key to that kind of lock then work from there? (I know places will not make these for you but I have a friend that works at one so he has access to a key cutting machine)
