2-way FRS radios. Saved our butts countless times.

And cell phones to see where the hell we are to meet up to go exploring.

I have no communication devices with me. Cell phone could be useful, especially if getting stuck or hurt somewhere and nobody knows where I am, but well, I'm too lazy to carry extra equipment.

I would agree that a cell phone is essential. If you are exploring in a group, you would be foolish not to invest in a set of PMR446 radios (FRS/GMRS in the States) as they cost peanuts now. In my experience if you are exploring underground the PMR446 radios work better than any other (except commercial 3-5W radios around the same frequencies), although they only really work underground down long straight tunnels or just around the corner.

FRS/GMRS radios for in the group communication.

For areas with cell service, a cell phone.

For other areas, a ICOM W32A Ham radio.

Nextel w/direct connect so that it can not be picked up by scanner.

FRS radios w/scrambler if w/others w/o nextel service.

Never a scanner as if caught can be a criminal offense.

ah! I own the same one! I love that radio. The dual knobs are awesome.

Usually I'll take a cell phone and make sure at least one other person has one too.

FRS/GMRS radios DO NOT SCRAMBLE. They use call tones (often incorrectly called privacy tones) to filter off unwanted traffic, but that affects what you hear not what is received or sent.

FYI in most cases, using encrypted signals with FRS/GMRS/Ham radio is a violation of the licenses.

Well not true - check Motorola talkabout I think t4200's - they and cobra both have a single voice scramble feature. This is in addition to PL tones - either tone or digital. While it is not encryption, some models do offer this voice scramble feature. Check the motorola website for FRS.

So the same model of radios w/scramble do offer some security from unsquelched FRS/GMRS &/or scanners listeners.

2-way radios, which are useful but unfortunately loud, as many times in the past they would have been useful to warn someone about a guard/person nearby. Still good though for splitting up, and cell phones are always a must.

Yeah, but look at the cost difference. Plus, don't you need an operators lics for those?
