Isn't there some sort of device to put on phone lines that disrupts calls? Someone at some point must have created one, but I'm guessing it's either rather expensive, or hard to get ahold of.

Just locate the main phone line that exits the building and cut it. No phone line, no way for the computer to call the alarm company. It will send a "trouble" signal, and they will likely send out a tech in the near future. Usually within a few days though, because phone lines do go down on their own and restore again.

Yeah, that's a great idea.
And leave your address, too, so the property owner can forward you the bill for repairing it.

No phone does not mean there is no way for the computer to call out. Depends what kind of circut it is. Some will are dedicated and if the circuit is broken it will cause and automatic alarm with the monitoring service. Cutting the phone line could cause a local local alarm signal to kick in. If it was that easy why would anybody have an alarm?
Phone lines dont go down on their own either. They go down due to poor maintenance by the phone company. They dont restore themselves either. If you are willing to commit a felony to get in a building why not use bricks and crowbars. Tampering with utilities is a serious crime.

Well as someone who used to monitor alarms for a living, I can tell you that phone line do go down and restore themselves. The signal you get when the phone line is interupted, is called a "trouble" signal. usually if a trouble signal persists over, say, 24 hrs. then we dispatch a tech or contact the RP (responsible party) to make sure that there is not some kind of problem.

You are right, tampering is a serious crime, as is Trespassing. where do you draw the line? The original post asked if you could disable the alarm system, especially the motion detectors. Well, I ask, is that not tampering?

Not to mention, but there are also other alarm systems tha use microphones (sonitrol) that listen, rather than detect an intruder, all with use a phone line (dedicated 3002 type of circuit) not you usual phone line with a dial tone.

anyhow.

As a phone company repairman (20 years)I will say that the only way they go down and restore themselves is if they go wet then dry out.

We will tell you alarm guys anything to close out a trouble report. lol

5csnc (dry circut) will trigger an immediate alarm although they are normally fire alarms and are being phased out

In an abandoned distillery (with profuse security signs) I snuck in and saw red lights which I thought had to be some kind of security system but they just turned out to be part of the electricity system which was still live. Happily they don't go to so much trouble in rural locations:

I always wondered why you guys told us that... Haahha... I figured that was the case on those trouble lines. "yeah it just "fixed" itself, no worries!!"

Say, how long does a motion detector battery last?

They're typically powered by the alarm panel (i.e. the actual alarm system). Alarm systems generally have a backup battery that can power the alarm (and motion detectors) for several days.

However, if nobody showed up after tripping the motion sensor, chances are the alarm isn't armed.

Will military "signature management" camouflage, designed to reduce a person's IR signature, work against IR-based motion detectors? Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Are you talking about the digital camo ?

I now have my CADPAT, and probably will use my boonie cap for explore, cause it's quite comfotable,

But, there's a strategy that's been use for many years to evade IR sensors on other military vehicals. You can walk almost a meter away from the sensor/camera without being seen. Our raingear is quite thick and if not worn, will cool to the surrounding temperature, You can put it on and walk towards the sensor and not be seen until you lift the hood of the jacket/pants. You have about ten minutes before the gear warms up significantly enough.

But this is only a sugestion if you can hang the gear off of a backpack or somewhere it wont touch you , other wise It can retain the heat for a while.
