The downside with Mags ist that they dim very, very rapidly. They drop down to 50% in an hour or so and only produce as much light as an AA minimag after three hours. If you need a lot of light for a long period, regulated LED lights are vastly superior.

Try and read reviews. I will probably be picking one up for a mini-mag and maybe my 4D soon. I'll pass on any knowledge I gain in my research before buying.
Couple things to look for. Be sure to get one with a 1, 3 or 5 watt luxeon LED, not multiple regular LED's. Also try to get one that is voltage regulated. You won't have any issues with dimming.
It should come with the LED mounted on circuitry and encased in a new reflector.

Its really slick. I have had it for about 2 years and used it moderately and still have the original batteries in it, and its going strong.

Yeah, that's why I chimed in, I'm a mechanical engineer. 
Machining doesn't do anything to improve the strength of the material -- however it was processed before it was machined (forging, heat treatments, etc.) would make it stronger or less strong. Plus, if it's already strong material, machining on it would be more difficult.
There are other processes that can allow you to obtain good strength and the shape you want without wasting a ton of material like that. My guess is that they start with treated tubing in the rough shape they need, then machine on it to give it small, needed features, such as the switch hole and threads for the endcap. If they started with solid tubing or even a solid block, you'd be probably machining away 90% of the material... plus, machining is pretty slow, even with NC equipment, compared to something like forging or drawing.
Uhh, wait.. this was about LED lights? Enough engineering geekery, we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

I would hate for my first post to be one contradicting a mod, but hey, I know alot about flashlights..
All high end aluminum flashlights are turned from a solid block, then treated, these days it is type III anodization that seems to prevail.

That has everything to do with light brightness and focus. LED's are just as capable as traditional bulbs. Hell, my headlamp casts a beam just about as far as my 4D maglite.

Depends on which Mag models and which LED lights you're talking about. A fair number of mass produced LED flashlights will easily outshine a 2D Mag. At the high end, there are a few custom LED lights around that will beat the living daylights out of a 6D Mag.

I don't have the money to spend $50 on a flashlight with hopes that it will last, when I can buy a maglight and know that it will last.
