| | | Posted by Olaf I have worked a deal with a local machinist and engineer to build a custom tool for UEr's for extrication and entry purposes. Combining in a small compact package ; a foldable locking pick (7"L x 3/4"W x 1/2" T), bolt cutters, integral pry bar, replaceable saw blades and a modular head that can take either a hammer attachment, an adjustable crescent wrench or screwdriver heads (other ideas in the works). I am curious if any others would be interested in such a tool, if so what other functions would you find useful? This would be a very sturdy, solid construction piece, designed with superalloy* hex screws for easy take down for cleaning and changing of utilities. Several models would be available, grade23 titanium** construction "chassis" for super light carry, tungsten steel alloy*** in hard use areas (pick head, cutter tips etc) and standard made from durable and corrosion resistant HSS M4 steel****
"chassis" the body of the tool * an aircraft industry term for superior grade alloys, expensive and very robust, these screws are designed not to strip the threads of the material they are securing and provide excellent fastening and long life ** grade23 titanium, hardest and strongest grade available, hypo-allergenic (does not cause allergic reaction, is used in some body piercings) *** tungsten steel alloy, tungsten is added to give ultra high hardness while still possessing toughness (ability to resist impact shock without cracking) **** industry grade very high strength and hardness steel, (HSS stands for high speed steel) retains hardness at high temperatures, these kinds of steel are used to machine all other types of steel, far superior.

| | | Posted by Olaf I was thinking more along the lines of a large size multi-tool, with functions that fold out and some that are integral. By a show of hands who would be interested in buying such a device (cost not important, just concept) ?

Hey Olaf, i have a link that you may find interesting. http://www.galls.c...al_catalog&cat=464
It's a safety, and emergency equipment company. They sell to police, fire fighting companies, and exploration groups. Hope you find what you need. [last edit 1/24/2005 6:08 PM by greywolf45 - edited 2 times]

| | | You guys use a saw blade and bolt cutters while exploring often enough that you need a mult-tool for it?? The little prybar caveman posted looks pretty nifty, but I really can't see many people using a giant multi-tool like you are proposing. The most invasive tool I've ever used was a screwdriver. Anything beyond that and I'm damaging the property.

| | | For me it would end up just being a "Custom Tool." Probably very little UE use, but a nifty tool to have around none the less.

| | | I'm sure I could find uses, but mostly I don't want to carry something like that around for legal reasons. There is usually a way to deal with all issues where this tool would be useful, with something smaller and less legally compromising. My multitool, for instance, has a crate opener which can pry with very impressive force.

| | | Man don't waste your time and people time building something like that. You don't have to be an engineer to make things like that. Start with this: http://www.leevall...?c=1&p=32016&cat=1,43456,43407 next go to your closest garage and ask them to weld you a bolt cutter and an adjustable wrench to the body of the thing. walking around a whole day in abuilding with a 2 pounds tool for "emergency" will make you pretty tired, plus you have to carry everything else like camera gear and flashlight. Useless [last edit 2/6/2005 4:20 PM by SPEK Photo - edited 1 times]

| | | You obviously didn't read the thread, I'm using lightweight materials so it DOESN'T weigh a lot. And I don't WANT to just weld some shit together, no one would want to buy that, I sure as hell wouldn't. Have you ever heard of QUALITY?

Now I read it; in case we get hurt we don't need to worry because the super tool is made of surgery grade titanium, but I will have to worry if the 4% of chrome in the M4 is not enough to prevent rust. Now you are going to bolt the thing together with grade 8 hex bolts available at home-depo. Are you going to make crescent wrench and bolt cutter also from titanium? It need to be light.. Quality? Building machines is my job, In the food industrie quality is the #1 priority. I don't have time to spend on break and enter tool, If I need something to rescue me in case of_ , I bring a cell phone: my friends have all the tools needed to get me out of the place. If you want a super-dooper alloy take a look at 17-4PH stainless steel. [last edit 2/7/2005 3:31 AM by SPEK Photo - edited 1 times]

Sort of. His tool is really a different thing all together though. Some of the functions may over-lap, but his seems more versatile (has bolt cutters and whatever else) and is also of much higher quality materials. Suggesting a cheaper alternative is nice. Mocking him is not. Personally, I would probably be more inclined to buy the cheap hatchet/prybar you posted, because either would be of limited use to me so why spend extra money. Some people, however, may find his tool very useful. Some people may value quality more highly in a tool like this. This is what he was asking. If you don't think it would be a useful UE tool then, by all means, say so. Just don't start insulting him for comming up with an idea and asking people's opinions.

Hey Spek, don't you think you're being hard on Olaf? He has a good idea on something that could possibily save my ass, and anyone else's should, god forbid, we ever got into a sticky situation. And you being a machine builder, your knowledge on the materials could be valuable to him, so how about assisting him, instead of criticizing him, and his ideas, Ok? | | | just like many other custom things I saw surveying on the forum like special hand shake, UE id card, UE T-shirt, there is lot of chances that nobody will see and heard about anything custom built that finally get to the accomplished state. I will be happy to help pushing forward any project prototype presented on pictures or blue print. But like many other thing when people have to pay for it; not much hands will get raised with a 20$ bill in to pay for the custom made thing. Make one for yourself, if it works and you are happy with it then ask the surrounding how you they are interested about your last innovation.

I hear you. Still, it might just be something that some UER type person could use. And who knows, it might just find uses outside UER.
