| | | Posted by BigPoppaMikey I use a scanner in my UE's for the simple fact that if law enforcement is coming to get me, I want to know. For about $200.00, you can get a good trunked, 500 channel scanner from Radio Shack, along with a scanner guide that will tell you the frequencies to program. These books cost about $20.00 and are well worth the exspense because not only do they cover police, but military, sheriff, SWAT, State Police/Highway Patrol, hotels, hospitals, private alarm companies, malls, etc. And in California, IT IS ILLEGAL to posess a scanner in the commission of ANY crime.

I don't know jack about radios or scanners, so this question is probably pretty dumb... By trunked do you mean mounted in your trunk? If so, how does this help you when you're roaming the site?

| | | Don't waste your money on an MTX800, they will only do 1 talkgroup on a Mot. Type I system...of which, there are almost none around. Get an MTX8000 instead. They will do 255 talkgroups on 20 systems. -Ex

Trunking is an automatic control system that assigns different frequencies to the radios being used, so to listen to a transmission or series of transmissions you need to be able to follow it across different channels. A trunking scanner uses the same control codes that the trunking system uses in order to follow the transmission.

| | | I'm currently in TO with two scanners, the Icom-R2, http://www.leeselect.com/icom/r2.htm and a Realistic ( RadioShack ) Pro-95, http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F008%5F009%5F010%5F00 3&product%5Fid=20%2D525 Don't be fooled though, you can't get a Pro-95 at RadioShack Canada anymore. The Icom-R2 will pick up all non-trunked analogue signals, this includes, Analogue Cell Phones, Cordless Phones, Consumer Walkie Talkies, TTC, some EMS, various Security Firms and a bunch of other stuff. The Pro-95 will pick up trunking systems, trunking systems are a way of utilizing a couple of frequencies efficiently by having a computer control conversations and swap them around between frequencies, you can pick up some trunking frequencies on non-trunking scanners but you will only hear bits of conversations and data static all the time. Toronto Police, EMS, Hydro, Works, etc, are all trunked, this is common for large cities. Smaller towns may not have any trunking systems. The Pro-95 will not pick up Cell or Cordless Phones because it is made for the US market where it is illegal to listen to phone conversations thus the frequencies are blocked out of many models. Some scanners, like the Icom-R2 offer Canadian versions which are not blocked. As for legality, in Canada, it is *legal* to receive any unencrypted signal. This includes Cell Phones and Cordless phones as well as Police. You cannot however divulge information or use the information gleaned in a malicious manner. This pretty much means if you're doing something nasty like decoding credit card numbers or listening in on cops while up to no good you can kiss your scanner g'bye and probably say hello to a couple more charges. Some provinces have exceptions, I've heard in Manitoba it's illegal to operate a scanner while driving, but this is the only exception I've heard of. broken
