Too simple? Opinions appreciated.

I need a photograph for a surrealism competition I'm entering. I just want a few opinions compositionally for these photos, and a preference of "one" or "two." Also, are there any existent threads that revolve around surrealistic photography? If so, I'd love to have a link.

Personally, I prefer the second photo, however the first one feels slightly more surreal. The contrast between the room (dirty) and the figure in the respirator (clean) is interesting, and it doesn't really feel like I'm looking at the reflection of someone, it feels like I have a reflection of someone looking at ME.

Second photo is creepy though, I like it.

I definitely like the second pic better (although they are both good), but it doesn't really say "surreal" to me.

The first photo, although it's nifty...doesn't really say anything surreal at all to me. It's pretty plain and simple, more or less rational. You can pretty basically understand the shot in a glance, I don't think it has a place in this contest.

The second one has alot more emotion than just goofin off in asylums. The B&W is a nice touch, the subject matter and model are ideal. Primarily it raises questions...what's she doing there? Who is she? What the fuck is going on?

So...two. By far.

The distortion and haphazard composition in the first one bug me, but depending on the competition that might not matter. I don't really see the surrealism in the second image.

Well to be honest neither of them are supremely surreal. But of the two of them, 2 is and 1 isn't.

I still think 2 might do well in the right type of photo contest. What are the details?

I like the second one too.

Better "too simple" that "overdone", IMHO.

Original for (One)

The goal I was going for exactly was to have the reflection in the mirror looking at you, and hopefully some people realized that there isn't an actual person being reflected since I threw it into photoshop for 2 minutes.

As far as the second one goes, it's an older picture that I used for my art college's portfolio and which I was rated 4.5/5 on composition and 4/5 for aesthetics.

The guidelines for this competition: "RULES: 1. Competitors cannot submit more than one photo. If multiple are submitted, only the most recent will be admitted into the competition.
2. The photo must have surreal or unnatural elements to it while not being heavily edited. The cleaner and simpler it is, the better.
3. A title and 500 character write up on the photo is allowed, but not required. However, after the $1000.00 first place winner is chosen, it will be required to provide a write-up for a gallery display."

Doesn't really give you much to work with. But so far it's looking like number two.

To be honest I didn't notice you removed yourself from 1. It could easily be interpreted as that you're behind the camera and thus not caught in front of the mirror, just in it. But it's still a cool idea now that I realize it!

But still, 2 :p

Edit: Also, nice use of the clone tool.

neither one seems especially surreal to me but as everyone else said 2 is a better photo. I wonder why if you took that whole 2 mins to edit yourself out in the top one then why not take another 2 mins and straighten the lines? Since it's for a competition, I would be willing to bet the judges would look at details like that.

I agree with the people who are curious how either of these are surreal. Care to elaborate?

Yeah, I agree with the questions about how the pictures constitute surrealism. On the subject of which photo I prefer however, definitely the second. I like the composition a lot more than the first
