| | | He's not entirely out of line with that argument....A lot of good P100 respirator cartridges (like the 3M 2097s I get through work) have "nuisance level" organic vapor protection which is quite good at filtering out ambient smells & odors. They could easily delay your acknowledgement of harsh chemicals or solvents used in a drug lab. That being said, his statement that a simple dustmask will filter asbestos and mold is entirely wrong and dangerous. Dust masks are shit, even for regular dust. I suppose they're better than nothing at all, but only by a small margin. I'd also tend to disagree with people who say you need to *always* trust your gut instinct. Of course you should strive to make informed decisions based on knowledge and experience, but there also comes a time when you need to say fuck it, and make a leap of faith. Some of the coolest places Ive ever been were ones that scared the hell out of me for weeks before I went. If I'd listened to that voice inside telling me "dont do it you fucking fool!" I'd have missed out on some of best experiences and favorite memories of my life. Then again, there`s a difference between operating outside of your comfort zone and doing stupid, dangerous things without experience.

Because, ALL respirator cartridges filter out ALL substances right? Wrong. I suggest you check up on this subject a little. The respirator is the frame, the cartridges do the work. They don't all work for everything. Many of them are relatively specific. Use them accordingly. Something that filters out particulate matter does NOT filter out bleach fumes or acid gasses or anything else you can "smell". It filters out *particulates*. It does not filter other gasses, does not supply fresh air.
|
I am aware of all of this. A good P100 respirator cartridge DOES block out every smell I have encountered while wearing it, including bleach. I apologize for my terminology, by 'respirator' I was referring to the entire device, frame and cartridge. High end dust masks (like N95) will block asbestos, and most mould. This is not recommended by their manufacturers, however they do work. [last edit 12/1/2011 5:51 PM by TeePER - edited 1 times]

not true. By definition, the "95" in N95 means that its rated to block 95% of particulates under ideal circumstances. Real world circumstances are rarely ideal, and that figure is likely much lower. Of course asbestos will get caught up in the material its dragged against, but only if its actually filtered through it. The fit of those dust masks is so poor they leave gaps around your mouth and nose. Whatever gets in those cracks is going straight into your body, just as if you werent wearing anything at all. The biggest difference between a respirator and a dust mask is the fit. A proper respirator fits tight against the skin without any gaps or leaks, but even this can be compromised if the user has a beard or long stubble.

Dust masks are out of the question for people with tiny faces. I've gotten sick 1 too many times due to this. Trust me, you don't want to be dealing with black grime in your nose and spitting it up for a day and a half sucks.

| | | typical cheap "dust masks" totally suck. From some places you can even get N95 masks and respirators in "sizes" that should fit most faces. But the shitty dust mask style things that are thin paper and have the dumb metal band at the top to crimp over your nose... might as well tie a bandanna or sweater over your face.
I recently explored a mercury mine, the main ore being cinnabar, that the mercury is extracted from in high heat retorts later on. The dust of cinnabar is highly toxic all by itself, and can accumulate in the body from respiration/ingestion just like regular mercury can. I wore an N95 mask for most of the time, and after the full explore of the mine it had to be discarded as it was saturated with mine dust. I then took my exploring clothes and all my mine exploring gear (ropes too!) to the laundromat to wash the dust out of everything.
TIP: If you think you've come across something toxic or hazardous, don't wash your stuff in your mom's washing machine. Take it to a local laundromat, and do it there. But be sure to wash everything that may have come into contact with the stuff, and don't just throw it on the backseat of the car on the way home. IF you think you've been exposed to toxic/hazardous materials, at the very least bag the stuff exposed before you drive home with it.
