Best tip & warning you have for No0BieS

Do any of the more experienced explorers out there have a tip and a warning for people new to exploring?

Tip - The Hunt is often as much fun as the explore. Try and find new stuff or even if you are planning on doing a location that is well known, try and find your own way in (without causing damage).

You'll feel like you've achieved more than if you had of received step-by-step directions from a fellow explorer.

Warning - Never get complacent! So much can happen to a location in between visits. A storm could cause the floor to rot that little bit more, or it could be your tenth trip into your local drain when you slip down a ladder and break a leg or that freak summer storm comes in from no where.

One tip I can add is form your own opinion. Meaning if someone says a place is beat don't always trust their opinion. Sometimes a place could be gutted but there still could beautiful shots. We are explorers, explore! Form your own opinion. Ever see a movie that you absolutely loved but someone who saw it before you said it sucked. Take a chance, go hunting, go exploring. Find out for yourself ;)

Closer than you think~ When you dig up the past, you tend to get dirty.

UER Search is shit.

The other thread was locked.

I tried to make it more specific.

This is why I try not to make serious posts on UER

Tip-Scrappers rarely care about you in my experience, they are pretty amiable people and i have held decent conversations with them before, long as you don't mess with them they are fine so don't worry.

Warning, avoid the thin black tar like roofs they have in some places, especially if it is bubbling and peeling. I was out today (pics and story will come later) in the basement of one building, and had a guy fall 3 stories in front of my group onto solid concrete, so if ever going out on roofs be VERY careful where you put your footing

tip:

Trust your instincts. My instincts have never been wrong, about anything, ever. Maybe that's confirmation bias but listening to my gut would have saved me a lot of money and a lot of stress many times, most not related to exploring.

warning:

Everything I've ever fucked up has been done by going against that gut feeling. I get the feeling I shouldn't do this ... and I still do, for whatever reason, leading to less than ideal results.

And that's a life lesson for you.

My rule #1 is that it's always best to be respectful, primarily because you never know when you're being watched.

Always watch were you are going to put your feet and hands. Trust nothing.
Avoid the living. Trust no one.
Scout out your own sites, and keep them to yourself. Show no one.

Your security measures were inadequate.

I tend to regard methheads as the same, granted, I've never run into the fabled "meth lab in the basement" of any abandoned buildings, but considering that I could spit out my front door and hit four working meth labs if the wind is in my favor, the possiblity doesn't really faze me.

My warning: watch where you step! With EVERY single step. I've navigated many dangerous floors by being very careful (and weighing just a hair over 100 lbs. surely helps too), but every single time that I put my foot or leg through (and thankfully that's as far down as I've sunk so far), it was because I got distracted and stopped treading so cautiously.

They should watch out for groping hands and tall people. Wait, noobies? Oh.

Use some common sense, read about what has happened to other explorers, go have fun, and don't stretch your limits too far in one go.

I have to admit Bfp, i'm guilty of becoming complacent and nearly falling through as well. I also have a great example of not watching your step in my most recent thread in the Mid-Atl forum, It's always important to watch where you're walking as you never know where a hole is or might open up.

don't shit on anything that might look like someone might come back for it later.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!
Don't try to have a UER e-penis! You won't impress anyone! This especially means you, Minneapolis MN newbies!

Tip - Carry a good tool knife, something small enough to fit in a pocket, preferably with both smooth and serrated sections (obviously, be aware of what constitutes a 'weapon' in your area so you don't get in trouble). I have a 2.5inch folding blade with heavy duty serration on the bottom half of the blade; it's small enough that it doesn't count as a weapon in my area (though it's big enough that I could use it as such if I really needed to) and it's useful for everything from jimmying doors to cutting through silly fence wire.

Warning - If the cops happen to start asking you why you're there, don't freak, keep cool. Acting nervous or otherwise spazzing is only going to raise suspicions. I've found that, in general, the best response to "What are you doing out here?" is just a simple, calm "Oh, I'm sorry officer, I was just being curious. Didn't mean any harm." That usually leads to "Alright, well, you can't be out here, so find somewhere else to be."
(note: I may have something of an advantage in that, nevermind being 25, I still look 16, so it's possible that cops assume I'm just being a 'stupid teenager' and don't feel like bothering with me past telling me to gtfo)

Paved roads and suburban homes? Pfft, that's just the icing; I want the cake.

So here's us on the raggety edge. I aim to misbehave.

I find younger explorers worry so much they miss great opportunities. Just do it. And if you get caught just tell the truth. Most people can see right through a story. And bring a reliable buddy in more dangerous locations. I always tell a family member where I am going and for how long when going into mines and deep wilderness. Have fun but be safe.

Edit: and don't ask what the wolf icon means. You really DON'T wanna know.

Don't watch any videos posted by Dougo.

Always tell someone where you are going & about how long you will be out. That way if something should happen someone will know where to start looking.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

I don't care if the person needs to crawl out on bloody stubs with multiple bee bites, poisonous snake bites, and a broken neck, the one thing you NEVER do is call for help! Do expect to be rescued.
If you're going to be one of those, don't go!!!
Bring plenty of water, lights, and learn to get out on your own, no matter what.

Think before you do something you and maybe no one can't fix.

there is a difference between expecting to be rescued everytime you get yourself in a jam and calling for help when you need it--your approach sounds reductionist and dangerous.

It's called taking charge; count on no one except yourself. It's survival 101.
Calling for help is rarely needed and if it is really needed, chances are you won't be the one calling!
Corpses don't need help, just burial, maybe.

...this is just ridiculous and somewhat stupid bravado, if you even have to think about calling for help, 9 times out of 10 you should. Or you risk causing even worse injury or even death, if i get seriously hurt while exploring and i'm on my own, i'm either driving to the ER if i can make it to my car or calling 911, i'm not willing to get myself even more hurt to prove a point.
