| | | Soft "exploring" locations in New York < on 10/13/2011 9:59 AM >
| | | Hi, A friend of mine from Australia who was once really into exploring, but has gone down the gf+kid path and has become a social explorer, is heading to New York in a few weeks (his partner is on a working holiday). He's hoping that his partner and their kid can go shopping or whatever while he checks something out. Back in the day he would check anything out, but now he is not prepared to even cop a chase So, to the point - are there any legal tours that have some kind of link to U.E. in New York? He's into tunnels and underground stuff if that helps, but would also dig industrial topside stuff, prisons, power stations, stuff like that. I just thought I'd ask you guys. Cheers, Doug

| | | No but just tell him to do Glenwood. It's so easy it might as well be legal. Oh and twice a year or so they open City Hall station for tours, but I'm pretty sure you have to be a member of the Transportation museum

| | | Can people still ride the subway through City Hall station just by not getting off at the last stop?

Well kind of. Just stuff where he wont need to ask his partner to come along to a police station with their 1 year old and bail them out I'm been a bit vague, but it's a short notice thing and he really doesn't have much time to escape the missus. No problem if there's nothing. I just thought I'd ask. Thanks to those that have checked so far. Cheers, Doug

| | | Posted by Radio2600 There's always Moe's Tours: http://walk.allcitynewyork.com/ If that's not your thing, they you can always pay $50-$100 to get in 5 Beekman. http://ltvsquad.co...ast-not-right-now/ For FREE there's Fort Tilden and it is mostly legal. If the National Park Service folks see you in a bunker or gun battery they'll tell you to get out, but that's about it. In decades of going there to try out noobs on NYC exploring I've never once had any problems.

sounds perfect. thanks a lot

| | | Everything Radio2600 just said. Atlantic ave tunnel tour is probably never going to happen again (legally). This is a city where you need to be ready to spend 24-36 hours in the system (before seeing the judge that will let you out) if you're caught.

Yeah, but all Kevin does are neighborhood walk tours. Look at the street signs and architecture stuff. I met him once. Kind of an interesting character.

Inflation has hit UE too! Although illegal, no one would probably care if you went in is the upper floors of the "Ground Zero Mosque" which is an abandoned department store. I guess if you went on Friday for salat and expressed genuine interest in the building's history, you could probably get a free tour. [last edit 10/17/2011 1:02 AM by Radio2600 - edited 1 times]

| | | Your mistaking NYC for a foreign country again. Ask most security people at any nyc building for a free tour and they'll tell you to leave. You'd have better luck with buildings that have no door people and aren't in the national news spotlight. Kevin is awesome in his own weird way. I once gave a talk with him and a few others at Cooper Union. His bit was about Queens, and his first slide was about the archie bunker house. All his tours are just walking tours, no B&E. Haven't seen him in years but do talk occasionally on the webs. Maybe I should do a walking tour sometime. Last time I did it was like 50-80 people - we walked in the back of BAT and out the front gate. The security people at the front were really really confused, but smart enough not to throw away their jobs by trying to make something of it.

Going on Friday for salat are the operative words.

Oh I thought you said Shaboss. That wouldn't go over well, but I'm sure masaskim could clean that up. Last I looked bannerman was expensive for the actual tour, free if you go via looted boat.

You're right, Shabbos would be bad. My 2 semesters of Arabic sometimes comes in handy.

Bannerman's Castle ceased being fun in the 70's after the State Police bomb squad removed all the live artillery rounds and looted all the remaining military stuff. Even if I had a boat I wouldn't go to Bannerman's. I'd go someplace cool like Great Gull, Hoffman, Swimburne or N. Brother.

I actually stumbled into his walking tour serendipitously while checking out Greenwood Cemetery.
