Even if I had a boat I wouldn't go to Bannerman's. I'd go someplace cool like Great Gull, Hoffman, Swimburne or N. Brother.

There are some birdwatching tours that get you to a lot of those places legally. Not sure about what season they're held, though...

Great Gull is via the American Museum of Natural History which has an Arctic tern research site there. Once the terns migrate off the island, you can sometimes get legit access.

The other islands people just go to. They're restricted access, but I've never heard of anyone getting hassled at Hoffman or Swimburne. Those two are actually quite small and aren't very interesting, but still worth a trip if you can swing it.

Bannerman Castle Cruise Tours. I have been there but not on a tour I went before the tours were available. I hear the tours are done well and cheep to about $30.
Bannermans castle is also kind of an industrial site as old man Bannerman produced uniforms for the north in the civil war. I plain on going back to get pics for this site next summer.
