Posted by jerm IXIn addition to the Norampac plant that closed recently, it was just announced that the Baskin Robbins plant will close on Sept 28.

I read they are closing because they can't keep up with demand so instead of expanding they are cutting 80 jobs and a Nova Scotia based company will take over the remaining Canadian production. I no longer support Baskin Robbins. Kawartha Dairy mi seh!

From the Globe and Mail:

"Peterborough is the last place in North America where Baskin-Robbins makes what it sells, and those 80 workers supply a third of the 4,200 outlets outside of the U.S., including 113 Canadian stores.

That production is now moving to third-party suppliers. Canadians' demand will be supplied by Scotsburn Dairy in Truro, N.S. -- for now. Like Peterborough, it's also a union shop. But most of what Peterborough produced will now be made in El-Paso, Texas, a right-to-work state with no minimum wage. Only 5.3 per cent of workers are union members in that state."

Also, Baskin Robbins is owned by Bain Capital...

Kawartha Dairies has a much superior prodduct.

Yesterday morning, I had time to kill as I waited for my friends Terapro and Doom and their respective better halves to arrive in Peterborough for a day of exploring. I decided to take advantage of the vacant demo site offered up on Thanksgiving Sunday. With no easy access, I was about to give up when I found a hole in the ground. I made my way through wet mucky asbestos in pitch blackness, through the asbestos shower zone and the morgue and then finally found my way up into the hospital. The conversion of the Nurses Residence is now complete and the demo crew is in the latter stages of clearing out the main hospital. Nothing is left except Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
