Found out the hard way...
< on 8/3/2011 7:18 AM >

POE tonight was through a chain fence some one had done - poorly - with wire cutters. They were sharp. It may be common sense for most of you, but being as hot as it is, i've been exploring in work out shorts and tee shirts. I won't be doing it again without a back up, as that cute wire HURTS. Also, two flashlights, because when you're in the middle of a school and your light goes out, it can be a tad difficult getting out.

Any more common sense items that you may bring that you may think others don't?

Not surprised about the cut wire. That's basically what barbed wire is anyway.

Last time I went exploring, I wished I brought gloves. I tried picking up an abandoned bass guitar, only to find it was lying partly under a shard from a smashed toilet.

good gloves and extra batteries for for your camera and flashlight are a must. And depending how much time you have and how exposed you are, when facing barbed wire at the top, sometimes it's best to just un-weave the fence itself starting at the bottom. Might be hard to get started but once you get going you can have a nice straight slit that becomes your door to avoiding getting cut to shit... and makes return trips easier. Just come back out through the same slit you make, and try to weave it back, or like connect it at the bottom, do it right and you shouldn't be able to tell the fence was messed with at all

Gloves are very handy.
Most people will say respirator, as they are handy. I have one but always forget to take it in with me.

May i suggest also take water. Water is good for a drink and washing your hands.

I always have gloves with me no matter where i go. I always climb everything so my hands get fucked up pretty good. I had fingerless gloves for a while but that didnt work out so i switched to full gloves and havent had any problems since.

Washing wounds too. Because the last thing you wanna do is put a bandaid on a filthy wound so that it festers into it.

I didn't even know you could do this. I'm used to just jumping over the fences. You have just become very popular with me if I can figure this out, haha.

Good advice guys! Keep it coming.

That's what I'm saying. Jeans, sneakers and leather gloves, just go over the fence, not through it. Ouchy ouch, I cringe thinking of that sharp wire cutting me! Plus, wire cutters could be considered a B&E tool if you encounter authorities.

Absolutely. I didn't cut it, I just climbed through some other lazy person's hole. My cuts are my own lazy punishment.

My 330lb fat ass can't climb too well, however being heavy can help you out against chain link, find the section where there is the greatest gap between posts, and 9 times out of 10 they use twisted wire to hold the chain link to the bar at the top of the fence if you can reach it, put some testosterone to the middle most twist and untie it, then nonchalantly lean against the chain and push as hard as you can on it with you back, this will stretch out the link and very often you can pull the bottom up high enough to crawl under. When you're done just re-tie the fence.

Edit: Don't forget your drugs/beer.

Ha, no problem with that...I climbed through a similar hole in a location, seeing no other POE...and then on the way out, saw that the front gate was wide open. Derp.

Best to climb at the gate posts or use some other moron's hole.

Be very careful not to get hung up on the chain link wires or the barbed wire at the top! A wire sticking in your thigh or rear, and with arm strength failing, is not a pretty picture. Neither is the tumbling/ ripping sensations as you gracelessly and deftly topple off, exhausted after several minutes of trying to get loose the "easy" way.
Been there, done that, and I'm not fat or weak.

Loose or weak fences are more dangerous as is scaling it at a single pole section rather than the gate. Be careful.

First aid for sure. Other than that just light and water. As far as fences go, barbed wire is pretty darn easy to get over if it's just the standard 3-row. No need to risk a B&E charge when you can wear some gloves and climb.

When you are just exploring buildings and such, I think a respirator is a bit much, but a lot of people probably just wear one to look cool. The most common threat in old buildings is asbestos, which is virtually harmless unless you plan on spending a few months in the building.

speed is key (not meth either). Have your way through the fence 100% safe n good to go, toss your bag of...tools and medications.. over the top, and get yourself under, through, or over to it.
