Gloves. I know it has been said, but I'm gonna say it again. Gloves. Nothing like grabbing board leaning in the corner and finding out the hard way there is a fuckin bees nest on the other side. Ever gotten 4 stings in your fingers and hand? Fuckin sucks. I hate bees. I really fucking hate bees.

Any gloves you recommend in particular? I've been using some decent leather working types but they are a bit clumsy.

Home Depot has some demolition (tearing down, not blowing up) gloves that are a personal favorite. Puncture resistant all around with reenforced leather on the palm and fingers, as well as added rubber for grip. they're not nearly as bulky as other gloves I've owned and keep your dexterity rather well.

Aside from the usual lights, water, boots, rope, extra change of underwear and fishing pole, dont forget to bring some form of ID incase you do get caught. It's a lot easier to prove who you are when asked than make up a alter-ego that they may check out.

I generally use mechanic's gloves while exploring - only issue with them is I have to really work to hit some of the buttons on my camera while wearing them so I often have one glove on and one glove in my back pocket.

Mechanics gloves are nice. But, honestly, it depends on where I'm at. I have some thick ass leather gloves if the place is really decrepit, but some simple "jersey" gloves work well in the cooler months and in "clean" abandonments (recent home, factory type deal) Just depends on the scenario. I can usually tell what I will need by looking at it from the outside.

Can't operate a cam well with gloves. Unless it's cold, it's better and easier to forget the gloves and use common sense.

Last wasp that stung me had their nest was destroyed by me, barehanded, as were the wasps.

I just bought some cheap gardening gloves and cut off the finger tips, decent protection and I can still use a camera.

I just have regular leather gloves from the gardening section at WalMart. Nothing fancy. They've served me well, and fit nicely in the front pocket of my camera bag.

A gun.

better yet, two. Carry both a pistol and a shotgun.

Also, road flares.

And a helmet.

I love my motorcycle gloves, sturdy leather, triple thick heavy leather on the palms gives great protection and with the fingers cut off after the first joint there's no issues with having them on and operating the camera.

I use Ninja X gloves. Have used them for years now, when I meet people I take a liking to, I give them a pair.

They aren't found in most stores, you either have to get them online, or from a safety supply warehouse. There is one about an hour away I get mine from and I stock up on them and buy 10 pairs or so.

I like them because they are tight-fitting, SUPER THIN, but give amazing abrasion & puncture resistance, and you can still operate a camera's controls through them.
Most of the "dipped" gloves have too thick a coating, or the rubber is too "sticky". These are awesome in the way that regular ones aren't.

Also, since they're so thin and tight-fitting, if you need to pull on leather gloves for some reason, you just pull them right on over the Ninja X gloves. The "Ninja X" style comes in 3 different versions. The rest of the "Ninja" line of gloves has some other excellent styles as well, like the HPT's.

**EDIT**
Oh! And they still cost less than $3/pair

I use Ninja X gloves.

I may have to grab myself a pair. My pair of gloves is very similar, the 'dipped' style and they have great grip. The only problem is that they're fluorescent green. Yeah. Not sure what I was thinking when I bought them, but they too were less than $3.

I always wear jeans and tall boots (generally ones that go to my knees) because of all the stuff I end up walking through. I always wear a sweatshirt or long sleeve shirt to protect myself from chemicals, barbed wire and splintered wood. I also always bring 2-3 flashlights, extra batteries, my camera's wall charger to charge with the adapter in my car, gloves that can be mittens or fingerless, a bottle of water and I keep foot warmers in my car since it gets pretty cold in some of these places during the fall and winter.

I'm putting in a new order on the Ninja X gloves. I've tried several of Ninja's other styles, but the Ninja X glove style is the all-around best.

Totally love them. Tighter-fitting is far better than anything sorta loose. They have amazing tactile sensitivity.

Batteries. Hydrogen peroxide for quickly cleaning any cuts, band-aids. A small pair of binoculars to quickly size up anyone who may be approaching the location.

Maybe not a common sense thing but, a handheld scanner programmed to the frequencies of the local/state/county LEO's as well as any private security companies known to be active on the property really comes in handy.

If approached, wipe the programmed frequencies. You can easily explain it away if you say you're on the volunteer fire department or ambulance corps in a town in another county. It may even get you "professional courtesy"

Like, with a Kleenex?

You make it sound like this is a very simple thing to do with a programmed handheld scanner if you see someone approaching you. Can you describe how this "wiping" is done, and how fast it is accomplished if approached?

What distance would they have to approach from for you to get this done properly?

how much more suspicious are you going to look doing it?

What happens when you say you're on the volunteer fire department, and so are they? What if they check?

Also, you carry around hydrogen peroxide???? really?
What about, alcohol wipes, or iodine wipes? You strap a bottle of HN03 to your belt and mob around with it or what?

My scanner is pretty old. all I need to do is pop the battery pack off and back on. It connects at the bottom with a slide release the whole thing can be done discretely in a second or two.

Thats why I said name a town in a different county. Although if they checked, you'd be caught. touche. Never had to explain mine to anyone.

Regardless, it's not illegal to carry a scanner, nor would it qualify as a B&E tool. Just doesn't look particularly good if you're listening to the same people who just got called out to investigate.

I have a small travel bottle (Think of the little mouthwash bottles you get at Walgreens)in my pack. Iodine or Alcohol wipes are fine too, it's just personal preference.
