I just spoke to someone about this place in a non UER conversation and i believe they said it's currently being remodeled in to a sports basement and close to opening.

It has a Porta potty in the parking lot. The main lobby and entrance now have a plywood box because maybe no doors (?) or added security. Junk stacked to access roof removed. Otherwise this looks exactly like it always has.

Berkeleyside, (a blog) says: Construction of the new Sports Basement at 2727 Milvia St., in the space previously occupied by Berkeley’s popular IceLand ice rink, has completed its first phase, said project manager David Rumberg. This phase included soft demolition of bleachers and the ice rink and other nonstructural aspects of the interior. The next phase will be to acquire shoring and excavation permits from the City of Berkeley for doing investigative work on the structure of the building. Rumberg said the city has been very responsive and that the store is still on schedule to open sometime in Spring 2014.

Apparently, they don't even know if it's technically feasible and it's being engineered on the fly. Spring of 2014 sounds like "within 6 months" to me.

The embankment that the side walls sit on are depicted as gone. Apparently, a retaining wall replaces this. Or a new foundation the same height if they take the embankment away from the outside also. And there is now a mezzanine that is going to be supported by a combination of cantilever and some impossibly small columns. They're going to jack up the building - after they devise a way to lift it - take out the embankment - put a new foundation the height of a stack of bleachers - and hope no jacks fail and let the whole thing crack in half - build the mezzanine - finish it for the public - and open - in 6 months!
