So, as I am sitting here at work looking out the 7th story window all I can see is smoke ...though the fire is over 70mi away...

Anyone near the fires currently? I am throwing around the idea of driving out and seeing them and am wondering if it is worth it. Input?

Damn. I would definitely drive out there, if I was in the area right now. (Being cautious, of course).

Well they expect that the fires have a while to burn yet, you still have time to get here

I'm sitting here at work in Wake Forest (just north of Raleigh more than 100 miles from the fire) and I've been smelling smoke for the last two days.

Well, not sure what ones you are talking about, but the 22k acre one is here at home, and the local FDs that I work for are out there.

Is it worth seeing? I am in the Greenville, NC area and nothing is really that close to me. So, I dont want to drive an hour+ each way to see some smoldering trees...

I'm in chapel hill but I am from Edenton, across the river from the fires. You could smell the smoke in the air as far as the Triangle and it was none too pleasant.

I hadn't thought about getting out there to see the fires-- dang! Too late now.
