I used to think that carrying my glock was cool. but the older I got I realized that it was stupid. One Glocks are not cheap. And two I would hate to be disarmed and killed with my own pistol so it's not worth even carrying any more when doing missions. Any feedback?

The only thing I, or anyone I will willingly explore with, should carry is a small pocketknife and a can of wasp spray.

Wasp spray is awesome, it temporarily blinds a human, but won't cause permanent blindness, it's freaking painful, enough to stop someone, but it's not crippling like pepper spray. Plus, pepper spray shoots 10' and comes out finer that wasp spray, meaning if it's windy, it can blow back on you. Also, pepper spray tends to linger in a room irritating you, too. Wasp spray, however, shoots 15'-20', and won't blow back on you. Plus, it's nice to have for wasps and costs $3.

Small knives are all around a good thing to have, it's a great way to defend yourself if you don't have wasp spray, and they're useful for all sorts of crap like opening stuff, eh, you know, knife stuff.

Anyone who carries a gun into an abandonment is an idiot, in my opinion, because at least here in the states, whether or not you have a CHL, if you get caught and are about to give you a ticket, a gun will automatically bump it up to criminal trespass instead of simple trespass, a misdemeanor instead of a violation. Also, our best defense as explorers against the law is to just be as honest as possible and say you're a photographer interested in the building and not a crackhead/drugdealer... Lost, stupid photographers with poor taste in locations don't carry guns, but drug dealers and meth cooks do, eh? Plus, the idea of getting disarmed of my wasp spray and having turned against me sucks but I'll live. If someone takes my Beretta? See you in the afterlife.

Missions?

Are you raiding a suspected drug dealers house or taking pictures of lonely chairs in hallway?

I always have a pocket knife with me which ranges from a 3" blade to a 3.75" blade. For exploring I have a Ka Bar in my bag, but not really for protection, just because it's good to have a sturdy fixed blade especially if you're going into any wilderness. It's not where I could quickly access it to defend myself, and I know nothing about fighting with knives and would probably cut myself worse than the other person.

I don't really see any need for protection as the people you will likely encounter are either: homeless, but able to be reasoned with; homeless, crazy, but probably not hard to escape from or outsmart; junkies who are easily outsmarted and escaped; other explorers who would presumably be friendly, or at least neutral; meth/crack cookers who would probably outnumber and out arm you anyways unless you're a SWAT team. Plus, like mentioned above, a weapon makes things worse if you're ever caught and hard to explain away.

I always go in with a big flashlight and a pocketknife but only for practical use, not defense. If it comes to it, the right flashlight can take someone out.

A couple of times I've grabbed a pipe or something for no real reason other than I was new to urbex and it felt right. That works best.

We carry pepper spray. Never needed it but feel safer with it. 100% legal in our state.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

As much as I love firearms (and really, I do), carrying a gun with you on a UE is a VERY bad idea, even if you've got a concealed carry permit. Trespassing with a firearm is a felony and possibly jail time. Apart from the legal consequences, you're more likely to get laid flat on the ground and cuffed, as the cops will instantly see you as a threat. Also, any inhabitants of your site will regard a gun as an instant sign of hostility, as would anybody else.
If you're a twitchy type of person, you might even lose your cool and fire it off for no reason, or shoot somebody out of reckless fear. That'd be bad.

I always carry a decent pocket knife with me which, in addition to just being a knife, would also make a decent self-defense weapon. I once carried a US Navy Seals fixed knife with me (it's my favorite), but it's six inches long, mean looking, and clearly built to kill. I doubt the cops would consider it a normal pocket knife, so I've decided to leave it at home.
Walking sticks can make decent self-defense weapons, plus they have a practical use in a UE environment. I usually bring a broom handle with me when draining, in order to feel the water ahead of me for critters, and to rest on in cramped pipes. It would make an excellent weapon if need be. Of course, if you're really worried about your safety, it might help to take some martial arts / self-defense classes and learn how to use your fists. They're always with you, after all. If you're a guy, consider lifting weights to bulk up - not only will you become stronger and more able to defend yourself, but you will look bigger, especially at the shoulders, and seem more intimidating to potential assailants, thus discouraging conflicts before they happen.
Stay safe, but don't get paranoid.

This is not true for Virginia (other states may be different). In VA, if you have your concealed handgun permit, and you're caught trespassing, the gun is perfectly legal. The only way a permitted concealed handgun could get you in trouble is if you're committing a crime WITH it (brandishing it, shooting things/people, etc...), or if you're drunk or have weed on you.

(I discussed this with a lawyer when I got my CHP.)

only thing i carry depending on where i go is a medium size fixed blade (when i'm coming off of work) or 2 small pocket knives just to cut me out if i get entangled, anything else is excessive and regardless of legality if you get caught, police are sure as hell more likely to arrest or ticket you than release you.

Another old school potential implosion thread.....2 in one week! I carry a pistol 99% of the time, but in New Mexico it doesn't affect a trespassing charge. Also, everything I do is rural. Personal call there, but you most certainly better know the law in your state.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.
