BeerBunny and I did a little exploring of Altona on Friday, found some great locations, but didn't have much luck exploring interiors....just wondering if anyone else has had any luck there?
It was somewhat eerie driving through there......gorgeous old homes boarded up and abandoned, yet there were still the few stragglers who seem determined to stay.

It was truly a ghost town! Even the wind didn't whistle....

here are a couple of the houses and the schoolhouse in Altona we were checking out.
the red brick house looked like it had recently been re-boarded.
anyone been inside these two? or can offer some history?
there was a long driveway leading down towards what looked like an active house.

I do know that this house was home to one of the Reesor family's.

Cavemen were once secluded to caves. Then they were released, they were released to explore the world!

As of Monday, they have demo'd a few more houses in the area, however the brick ones are all standing. Anything with history is staying for a while. I read a local paper that said another historical evaluation was being done soon ?

I noticed the red brick one does not have a fancy government sign like the others so hopefully it is there when I can find some time to head there.

Thanks for all the info

The sign is there, it's just face down on the porch. At the time we arrive, they had re-boarded the front door. Someone was brazen enough to rip the cover right off the front door (Damaging the vintage door knob). Whoever replaced the boarding left the old one and sign on the porch.

I'm keen to head back again and learn more about the town, so if you'd like to visit, PM me

Hi Haymaker!

The Government signs read "Property of Transport Canada". Basically they are tearing down a historical town to put up a new International Airport.

Google Pickering Airport or Altona Airport. Also, the DB has a few listings and stories on it as well.

It's a really sad story and even worse visual when you visit the town itself.

The Pickerng Airport Lands were expropriated in 1971.

The house is on the second conc just south of the pickering/uxbridge townline.

Its still standing. It will for a long time. The cemetary is to the north, the school is basically across the road.

Security is by the Commisonaires.

I know two of them pretty good. Im not sure how much to say about that.

I dont have problems there, im very local. There are more closures to occur. The houses for the most part that are to be demo'd have been done already for this term. There will be more scheduled.

This is somewhat how it works.

Transport Canada (TC) has a field office just to the west of CLaremont on the north side. It has workers. Those workers are paid a wage. They like it. I would to. There is also a budget. So, they have X amount of dollars per year to operate. The houses never paid for themselves, always disgruntled habitants. Always updating, siding, plumping, rent was kept low. The farms paid the way. The land is still very cheap to rent. The roadways need maintenance. Pickering does some road maintenance out of their southern yards. They TC has to keep paying out to receive the same federal funds next fiscal year. But they are not overly accountable to how they are spent. You would SYP if you knew what these people do for their wage. Which increases considerably as houses are knocked down. The scrap is seperated and the demo crews get a cut.

If you are interested in updates let me know. I can answer most questions you might have on this area.

Enjoy the area. Watch for the orange and white pickups.

Hey there. I would have to agree with.......
Post by Rallypoint1
....
As most of these lands have been aquistioned by the government for the proposed air-port lands in this area{North Pickering area}. Most of these properties will either be demolished and/or moved to somewhere else. Most of these houses were built in the 1880's. As for the last few years nothing has really happened in terms of the house/property's. But recently, I had read a news report stating that the "Buttonville Airport" is up for sale. There is over 170,000 flights that come out of "Buttonville Airport" every year, and these flight won't be able to re route to the Island Airport or Pearson Airport. The build of the Pickering Airport might actually happen. Forcing these houses to their fate. End of the line.

When I was exploring on Friday, I was coming out of a house when a white pick up with an orange stripe drove up. I happily waved and batted the baby blues. They didn't even stop, they just drove off. I wondered if it was them.
Phew...they almost caught me watering a bush

Rally - I'd love to learn more and I'd love to tour with a native to learn more. THe history intrigues me. May I travel with you one day to visit the area? I live close and I pass through daily for work.

We definitely saw one of the white trucks while we were trudging through the snow down an EXTREMELY long driveway.....does security patrol this area 24/7??

Yeah they do patrol the area 24/7. But they patrol 30 something thousand acres. They have often updated to 2 trucks but not usually. Main time is planting and harvest, much the same as the farmers. Yeah, read that a little closer.

Most of the time they wont bother, have camera in hand. Entering or exiting building, well you might run into a problem.

The trucks run from roughly hwy 48 to the west, brock rd to the east webb rd to the north and the hwy 7 to the south although they do travel further south into Whitevale but not often.

The borders are not square, often splitting fields in half for airport boundaries. Often times over the years, properties have been sold back, only outskirt properties but that was mainly in the 70's. One was recently.

Some properties that are close to the road....they often do reports, mostly just a yep everything looks good here. Clipboard. That sorta thing.

The Golf Course on the tenth (reesor rd) is also part of the airport, as well as the golf course on the 7th east of the townline.

They like Tim Hortons in Stouffville, they drive over on the 19th ave everyday.

I visited Altona in mid to late 09 i believe and was actually able to grab some interior shots of a few places. Then right before Christmas of 09 i had a HD crash and lost almost all of my pics. What a pissoff that was...

Is the white house just down the road (same side) from the red one with the wraparound porch still standing? The chimney was all broken off if i remember correctly.
