| | Where do YOU draw the line? (POE) < on 11/7/2010 12:36 AM >
| | | So I just recently completed my 2nd UE trip (Camp 30 in Bowmanville), and I started thinking about where I would draw the line in order to find a point of entry. My first strip was a hospital that was pretty open, nothing was nailed down, easy to get in. There were stuff that prevented entry but I simply relocated them. However, at Camp 30, there was some buildings that were boarded up tight. Some had evidence of people trying to break in and failed, like doors with dented corners and stuff. Some buildings were boarded up, except a window. (Which allowed me to get inside) Another building had a bolted door, which were basically ripped off by previous visitors, which also allowed me entry. But what would I have done if these previous visitors didn't create these openings? Would I have broken down these boarded up entrances in order to get inside? If I'm heavily against the idea of breaking stuff in order to find an entry, wouldn't using an entry that was created via this method essentially be supporting the notion of forcing your own POE? Thus denying myself the chance of exploring the location? It's one thing to trespass, but a different challenge to create your own POE (provided there was no 'natural' POE). So I'm wondering what's everyone's thoughts on this is. Or what would you do (or are doing) and how far would you go?

| | | I will go through an open door, or crawl through an open window. That's just about it- anything else, and I leave and will come back to check again later and see if anyone else has broken in in the meantime.

| | | Yay! Look guise, another ethics thread that will soon be locked.
Part the TOS of this website is we do not discuss entrance points and UER does not condone vandalism or destruction of property.
You put yourself at higher risk for legal trouble and you make it easier for others to get in and vandalize, steal, scrap.
Some may argue that this is an eventuality or that we shouldn't hoard locations but: 1. increased knowledge of a location leads to increased access 2. increased access means increased damage. 3. increased damage means increased security 4. increased security means more desperate attempts at entry (i.e. ripping boards off) 5. eventually the building gets trashed, secured, burned down, or demolished "to keep people safe" ...it's just how it is.

| | | I guess I asked this question cause I'm new at this. Though I understand where you are coming from, I hope you understand why I started this thread. I didn't know this had the potential to being locked nor was I asking for locations. I guess a newcomer would use the open database, or other sites, or even nearby abandoned buildings near his/her town to try UE for the first time. Naturally, this location would have been already visited by countless others, and thus leading to it being boarded up and closed up more tightly. The newcomer, being unfamiliar with the practices, wonder what the 'correct' actions would be and what would other UEers would do in the face of a boarded up building. However, being new, he didn't take into account that the more experienced UEer doesn't usually face these problems since the location they explore are rather 'fresh' or not public-info, thus a less chance to be boarded up. I guess it's pretty silly to ask if the more experienced would break down barriers in order to gain entry, but looking at it from a different angle, we are already trespassing and breaking the law. I guess it's up to each person to decide how much further down the road they are willing to go. Though your post did not exactly respond to the original intent of my post, it did help me realize what I just typed out above. I shall think on this some more and will know what to do the next time I'm faced with this dilemma.

The reason I expect this thread may get locked is because these ethics debates tend to get heated and devolve quickly, not because of anything you, specifically, posted. That is, someone'll say "Breaking stuff is bad", someone else will say "Breaking stuff is fine, and you're a hypocrite for using existing broken entry points," to which someone'll respond "I'm not a hypocrite and your mother's a whore." At which point the thread gets locked. Hopefully it won't go that way, but I think that's what TheVicariousVadder was foretelling.

| | | The only time I would probable break-into a location is if, I was lost in the woods, in winter, and I happen to come across a cottage/hunting cabin/ etc,etc.. Its pretty much basic survival skills. Life or death.

Ha, that was exactly what I was afraid of when I thought about the thread more. I was hoping to see what others would do personally or does on their UE trips, but then I thought I may be asking too much from the intrawebz. Everyone have their opinions and methods, I was simply hoping they would state theirs without flinging poo at each other. Damn, I thought flames and trolls only existed on gaming forums

Yep.
One of the things I like to do is to find a poe that requires ability and ingenuity to get to ... walking in the back door is nice but get's boring pretty quick: a challenge is good every once in a while. A difficult climb or specialized gear makes things much more interesting. You appreciate it much more when you have to work for it.

| | | I personally have nothing against destroying stuff which isn't a part of the location itself. Chainlink fences, padlocks, wooden boards... as long as they're not part of the history of the place I don't care. I will not kick open doors, break windows, etc. I would much rather come back with a set of pliers of a screwdriver and remove bolted shut doors and such in a nondestructive manner. Worst damage I've done was tearing a hole in some window mesh bigger to try and get inside. I've never been totally shut out of a building though, and thus haven't needed to resort to such. I'm probably also the most liberal about it here so... yeah, **waits for other people's opinions** /me now prays that the mods don't ban him for something.

[Literal answer follows] Actually it doesn't. "Sound is vibration, transmitted to our senses through the mechanism of the ear, and recognized as sound only at our nerve centers. The falling of the tree or any other disturbance will produce vibration of the air. If there be no ears to hear, there will be no sound." (Source: wikipedia)

If there's an animal to hear it, then yes. If there's a recording device to hear it, then yes. If not, then no.
Oh, and on topic, I won't break anything to get in. I am quietly thankful that others will. [last edit 11/7/2010 3:10 AM by rob.i.am - edited 1 times]
