Ask for permission. But only after you've tried it and know you won't get in otherwise.

if you ask for permission and you are told "no", the owner has just conveyed to you a verbal notice not to trespass.

In many states this raises the crime significantly if you are caught.

Getting arrested after you received verbal or written notice is almost always more severe than if you walked past a posted notice (sign).

It's one of those rare occasions you may actually risk jail time, especially if you have a prior or two.

Reread my comment. I meant to only do it last, for that exact reason. Once you know you're not getting in, it doesn't matter what the penalty is for trying again, because you know that trying again won't work. I've found permission to be about 5-10% successful from my experience with it.

Ask for permission after you've been caught.

"Hey, would you mind if I finished taking a few more photos? If anyone asks, I'll say you told me to leave."

"Sorry, I wouldn't have come in here if I thought I would cause anyone any grief. I hope it wasn't a big hassle for you to come out here. Who would I talk to about getting official permission?"

Damned good advice... I also want to point out that camera can get ya out of a lot of tight situations. Just bring one even if you don't use it!

Someday the world will thank us for what we do. We take that which is forgotten about and immemorialize it through pictures and our minds. History will look back at what we have done and cherish it as a keepsake without a price, for it will show them what time forgot in a way that the world has never seen it. This is why I do this...

"we're just photographers card" works quite well

I have yet to not have it throw security/cops for a loop. They generally think the worst of people so it's a complete surprise when that's what we tell them we were doing.

The first (and only) time I've been caught, having my camera didn't help.

Me "We're here just to see the decay of these buildings and to take pictures for ourselves"

Security "With photographic equipment? Likely. Who paid you to come here, and what are they planning?"

Me "Nobody paid us; we're here because we find these buildings interesting..."

Wow... that d-bag rent a cop has read way too many conspiracy novels. Usually this isn't the case, but that sucks mate!

i suppose if i had to, i would use my taekwondo ninja skills to climb to a very inaccessible place and create a POE, then very few people would be able to get in that POE, but they might just make their own

lets do it

All you can really do about what other people do is do things TO them (Hey ha ha guys when will you be in town so I can call the cops or cement entrances closed). But other people won't change their actions so don't worry much.

I would never break any windows or doors just to get in, or would I break fencing. I would push it to the side it there is enough give and I'll move plyboard aside by never rip it off if it's nailed.

I draw the line at using thermite. Then I burn the shit out of the line. If the building is still standing when I've left, I didn't try hard enough.

shotgunning the handle... does that actually work?

I would draw it at anything that destroys or damages an element of the building (if it is a heritage building) or any direct damage to the property (if it is newer)

I would not break boards to get into an older house as it would leave it exposed to the weather. But I do not care about the houses from the rise of suburbia.

Funny, in most of the locations over here, getting caught with a camera would likely make things worse. Still not that bad though.

Eh, I quit breaking into anywhere occupied when I turned 18 and would not be charged as a minor.

But as far as abandoned places and so forth, I'll break through boards if they are old enough. If you can tell that the place is already becoming run down and no one really cares about the property, then game on in my book.

I won't break glass for multiple reasons. Harder to replace. Gives away your position. Makes a sharp and dangerous mess. And so on. But I will break a SEAL on a window or a latch to get the window open.

My rule of thumb on it is, if the place is already going to crap, what is my breaking a door open going to really do?

So if it's old, you protect it, but if it's relatively new then you could care less?

What if the folks back when your "old" buildings were relatively new had the same premise?

I will usually not take down any nailed up boards if I am in a busy place or if it looks like doing so will damage the site. I will undo anything that can be redone, so anything that needs to be unbolted or unscrewed is no problem. I generally like to reseal things after I leave but there are a few places where I intentionally leave it open for others. As I general rule I will not do anything that will damage the site or make it less accessible to others.

Explored a motel two days ago, second floor access was denied by a lock on a door. I removed the lock by prying out the screws, freeing the door. When I left, I placed the screws back in its place. There was clear indication of others visiting the place, so was pleasantly surprised that everyone before me have been placing the screws back in when they left the place. Keep it up!

Question, was there still a note on the wall still in the room on the left saying something along the lines of not taking anything out of the room?
We did the same thing, regarding the door...seems like either someone lives or stays up there.
